move on to Cleveland, Israel

Given the huge turnout for
testing, and the cost of $75
for each of the first four an-
tigen tests and $200 to $300
for the last two, the Atlas
family's private campaign is
under a lot of financial
strain. "The problem isn't
the number of donors, it's
money, and that's what's
disturbing," she says.
"We'll just keep going un-
til we run out of money,"
says Simon Atlas, who has
established a tax-deductible
fund, the Jewish Social Ser-
vice Agency, apart from the
regular campaign drive to
find donors.
A national bone marrow
program was established by
Congress two years ago, but
its paltry funding and its
limited number of listings,
especially for those of Jewish
descent, have put serious
constraints on its ability to
help those in urgent need.
According to Simon Atlas,
only one in five are able to
get a marrow transplant
from a family member, for
which there is a 70 percent
success rate. There are 9,000
people currently waiting for
a compatible donor, of which
25 die every day. The success
rate for non-related
transplants is 40 or 50 per-
cent.
Bart Fisher, who founded
the national marrow donor
registry in 1986 after his son
died of a bone marrow
disease, said the roster has
grown to 72,000, but "mostly
of Midwestern white Anglo-
Saxon Protestant descent.
There wasn't awareness of
the problem faced by
minorities until Allison
went public.
"She has done a great na-
tional service," Fisher add-
ed, "but the Jewish popula-
tion in this country also has
to realize that the issue isn't
Allison, it's the hundreds of
Allisons."

Tax-deductible contribu-
tions can be made out to the
Jewish Social Service Agen-
cy and sent to the Atlas
