Reporters for leading
American newspapers have
been "indulging in some
imaginative grammatical
activity to avoid using the T-
word, terrorism," according .
to Bertram Korn, Jr., head of
the Committee for Accuracy
in Middle East Reporting in
America (CAMERA).
In CAMERA's newsletter,
Korn wrote that the State
Department denounced the
attack on Israeli tourists in
Egypt earlier this month as
"a horrible act of terrorism."
But journalists, claims
Korn, did contortions to
avoid using "terrorism."
The New York Times' cor-
respondent in Egypt, called
the killers "assailants" and
"attackers" and called
earlier terrorist attacks on
Israelis in Egypt the work of
"anti-government Egyp-
tians."
The Washington Post
called them "masked men."
The Philadelphia Inquirer
referred to them three times
as "men," and once as
"attackers."
Such language "implicitly
distorts the true character of
the killers," said Korn.
"Someone who is merely
`anti-government' sounds
like a political dissident.
Phrases like 'masked men'
and 'raiders' conjure up
images of American folk
heroes such as the Lone
Ranger and Indiana Jones."
