ditorials in Jewish
newspapers around
the country are urging
that Jews be taken out of the
Soviet Union before a new
wave of anti-Semitism in
that country turns violent.
The San Diego Heritage
editorialized that "the
writing is clear on the wall
in the Soviet Union: This is
no time for Jews to delay
their actions. The tragedy is
that Jews were among the
most heroic in the struggles
to save the country from the
ravages of the Nazi hordes,
aided by armies of Ukra-
nians and even brigades
from France and Holland."
Jews living outside of the
USSR, continued the
Heritage, "have a monumen-
tal task of rescuing our
brethren in every way possi-
ble." The editorial even
called for Jews to purchase
ships to transfer Jews in the
Soviet Union to Israel. But
the "mounting crisis" re-
quires a united front, the
editors concluded: "It is high
time that the discredited
Breiraniks, New Jewish
Agendaniks and the Tik-
kuniks be asked to halt their
vile assaults on the govern-
ment of Israel."
(The three groups men-
tioned are Jewish organiza-

tions especially critical of
Israel. The first has been
defunct for several years.)
Denver's Intermountain
Jewish News noted that
Soviet Jews are heeding the
warning signs from the
Holocaust: "Soviet Jewry is
drawing every logical lesson
from this century's treat-
ment of European Jewries:
Face signs squarely! Believe
the unbelievable!"
The paper called on U.S.
Jews "to acknowledge the
breadth and depth of the
crisis now upon us" by fun-
ding the United Jewish Ap-
peal's special campaign to
resettle Soviet Jews in Israel
and demanding that Presi-
dent Bush and Congress ask
Mikhail Gorbachev to "put
his power and prestige on
the line against Soviet anti-
Semitism."
Meanwhile, the Jerusalem
Post warned that "an aliyah
crisis is brewing" because of
Israeli President Yitzhak
Shamir's call for a "big
Israel" to absorb Soviet
emigres and protests from
Arab states and Moscow that
the new immigrants will be
used to push Palestinians
from the West Bank.
The Post's worst possible
scenario regarding Soviet
Jews is for Russian reac-
tionaries to topple Gor-
bachev and then keep Jews
in the USSR "as
scapegoats."

The cover on the March
Vanity Fair calls him "the
alien from Arcturus," and he
turns out to be a self-
proclaimed guru who is gay,
sadistic, a wheeler-deal in
semi-precious gems — and
anti-Semitic.

Frederick von Mierers,
who has his headquarters in
an apartment on New York's
Upper East Side, tells his
followers to beware of Jews,
according to author Marie
Brenner. He exalts Germans
