New York (JTA) — Ground
was broken Feb. 19 for the
interfaith prayer and edu-
cation center that is to
replace the Carmelite con-
vent at Auschwitz.
The ceremony was attend-
ed by Cardinal Franciszek
Macharski of Krakow, in
whose diocese Auschwitz
lies, and representatives of
the Polish government. No
Jewish leaders attended.
Earlier this month, a
Polish bishop who is active
in Catholic-Jewish dialogue
assured a United Jewish
Appeal delegation of Ameri-
can rabbis visiting Poland
that construction of the
interfaith center would
begin soon.
Elan Steinberg, WJC ex-
ecutive director, claimed
that "the first spade had
been struck" as a direct
result of negotiations bet-
ween his group and the
Polish government. A WJC
delegation arrived Feb. 18 in
Warsaw, for meetings with
Poland's leaders.
Steinberg said in a tele-
phone call from Warsaw that
WJC President Edgar
Bronfman would not have
visited Poland without an
express commitment toward
implementing the February
1987 Geneva accord that
stipulated creation of the
center and removal to it of
the nuns living at the
Auschwitz convent.
The agreement was signed
by nine Jewish and nine
Catholic leaders, including
Cardinal Macharski, who at-
tended the ceremony.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — After six
days of almost non-stop
effort, city workers recov-
ered the body of 71-year- old
Arye Reisman, who was lit-
erally swallowed by the
ground when a sidewalk col-
lapsed under him outside a
Beersheba shopping mall on
Feb. 1.
Reisman was buried under
30 feet of mud and water in a
1,000-year-old Byzantine
cister.
An inquiry will be opened
into the issuance of building
permits at the site.
