BEST B&Bs
The inn was once a well kept secret,
but it has become the hot spot for out-
of-town dining among the Washington,
D.C., glitterati. Patrons have included
Katharine Graham, David Brinkley,
James Reston, Willard Scott, James
Kilpatrick, Eugene McCarthy, and
Craig Claiborne. And just to keep chef
O'Connell on his toes, three-star
Michelin chefs from France and
Europe have sampled the pleasures of
his kitchen. The restaurant has gained
the Mobil's coveted five-star rating.
The inn has also recently achieved
this status. The wine cellar is \ye 1 1
stocked and includes Inn at Little
Washington, private label, a chardon-
nay white wine.
The Inn at Little
Washington has a first-
rate restaurant.
To get a weekend table, you must
book three to four weeks in advance.
Overnight guests are guaranteed a
table. Honeymooners take note:
rooms must be booked months in
advance.

John Rutledge House Inn,
Charleston, South Carolina
One of Charleston's most stately
antebellum homes has recently been
opened as an elegant bed-and-break-
fast inn. The 1763 home of John
Rutledge, signer of the U.S. Constitu-
tion, is one of only 15 homes belong-
ing to the Signers that is still standing,
and the only one to offer lodging for
guests.
The three-story mansion in historic
Charleston is noted for the ornate
ironwork — said to be one of Amer-
ica's most outstanding — on its facade.
