Victorian room with cannonball bed
and Oriental rugs, the New England
room with four poster and wooden
rocking chairs, or perhaps the
Fireplace room with working fireplace.
Everybody's favorite is the Fan room
with its arched fan window and
French doors that open onto a balcony
and an exquisite view of the Blue
Ridge foothills.
In winter, chef Paul Shell concocts
a hearty stew or seafood pie. The wine
list is divided between French and
California, with a few local selections,
mostly from nearby Naked Mountain
vineyards. A country breakfast is
served in the dining rooms and is in-
cluded in the room rates.
The Ashby is located at the base of
Sky Meadows State Park, so bundle
up and bring your hiking boots.

The Inn at Little
Washington, Washington,
Virginia

Honeymooners in search of a
sophisticated inn with arresting decor
and a first-rate restaurant will want to
investigate The Inn at Little
Washington.

The ambiance is nothing short of
seductive. Lighting is low; decor em-
phasizes English antiques and dark,
rich fabrics. Among the rooms, there
are two duplex suites with sitting
rooms, bedroom areas, and balconies
with views over the village to the near-
by Blue Ridge Mountains. Suites have
jacuzzi baths and separate showers.
The amenities, like candies on your
pillow at bedtime, fresh flowers ar-
ranged by the inn's own florist (one of
a staff of 30), and The Washington Post
at the door in the mornings, suggest
a deluxe hotel in the heart of a big ci-
ty. But, in fact, this is Washington,
Virginia, the town that all 189
residents call "little Washington," as
distinct from the "big" Washington 75
miles to the east.

The owners, Patrick O'Connell and
Reinhardt Lynch, are former caterers.
