His reaction was typical of many in
the throng of nearly 1,000 Detroit
Jewish singles who gathered Dec. 24 at the
Maple-Drake Jewish Community Center for
the annual "Only Spot in Town Dance."
Co-sponsored by the JCC and The Jewish
News, the dance offered snacks, drinks and a
wide range of music — from rock to rap, sw-
ing to cha-cha — by disc jockey John Sarver.
It was an effort to provide a place where
Jewish singles of all ages could gather and
enjoy themselves.
And judging from the reaction, the effort
was successful.
"Look at all these people — I've never seen
such a crowd," said Lowy, a Southfield resi-
dent attending his first "Only Spot" dance.
"I'm sure there could be more of these and
people would come," he said between dance
sets.
