Poll: PLO Talks
Are Inevitable

Loretta Lorion

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israelis,
by a 50-37 percent margin,
believe their country even-
tually will have to negotiate
with the Palestine Libera-
tion Organization, according
to a poll.
The 1,000 respondents,
representing a sampling of
the urban Jewish popula-
tion, were polled at the
beginning of December 1989
by Dr. Avraham Diskin, of
the Hebrew University's Po-
litical Science Department.
Asked if they believed that
ultimately Israel will have
to negotiate with the PLO,
15 percent said "definitely
yes," 35 percent said "yes"
and 12 percent said
"perhaps."
Among those who thought
otherwise, 22 percent said
"no" and 15 percent
"definitely no."

Israeli Captain
Is Sentenced

Tel Aviv (JTA) — An
Israeli tanker captain got a
one-year suspended sentence
and was fined the equivalent
of $2,800 by an Egyptian
court last week for allegedly
causing an oil spill in the
Gulf of Suez in October.
Capt. Yosef Zvi, master of
the government-owned
tanker Nyuta, was not pre-
sent when the admiralty
court in A-Tur pronounced
sentence and ordered him to
pay an additional,
unspecified sum to cover the
cost of cleaning up the oil.
The captain, who was rep-
resented by legal counsel,
insists his ship was not
responsible for polluting
Egyptian territorial waters.
The Nyuta has been
employed shuttling Egyp-
tian oil from Sinai to the
Israeli port of Eilat.
After the alleged spill, the
ship was detained and held
for more than three weeks at
the East Zeid Bay oil port.
The ship and its company
were released through the
personal intervention of
Egyptian President Hosni
Mubarak.
