of wood; on another is
plastered an ad for an Israeli
musician giving a concert. In
store windows are an-
nouncements for the free
Torah High School and the
Kiddush Club's record of the
year.
On the street are
youngsters wearing kipot and
riding their bicycles. Chasidic
residents carry their clothes
to the tailors. Neighbors
cluster to schmooz as they
pick up the latest edition of
the Jewish Post and the For-
ward at Negev, which stocks
a full supply of Jewish
newspapers and , magazines
along with its selection of
Jewish books, gifts and ritual
objects.
South of the food strip, Beth
Tzedec Synagogue is another
must for Jewish tourists. The
members of this Conservative
synagogue have created a
museum of Judaica which is
now the largest collection of
its kind in Canada. In the
display cases are silver Torah
pointers, kiddush cups, and
intricate menorot.
In its own case is one of the
museum's prized possesions: a
rare Chinese megillah from
Kaifeng, its detailed scroll in
illuminated Chinese design.
Though this is the one of
the museum's most valuable
items, ketubot are also on
display. So impressive is Beth
Tzedec's collection that in
1981 the Art Gallery of On-
tario mounted an exhibit of
ketubot from this collection.
The heart of the museum's
collection comes from Cecil
Roth, a noted British collector
of Judaica. When he decided
to sell his collecton, which
focuses on Italian-Jewish art,
the determined museum
members from Beth Tzedec
acquired it, and now about
800 of the museums' 1,300
Judaica items are from the
Roth collection.
But museum members have
also added their own finds.
"We have congregation
members who are active col-
lectors of Judaica," says
curator Judith Cardozo, "and
they give us things they've
found or owned." Some
members, she says, haunt
auction houses and antique
shops; others donate items
from their households.
Cardozo stands in front of a
large wooden circumcision
chair at the front of the
museum. "See how worn this
is?" she asks, pointing to the
chipped legs. "That's because
until recently this chair was
still being used. That's why
we consider this a living
museum."
