FRIDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1989

J

t looks like any other
restaurant . . . but after
gleaning the menu, you
suddenly realize that this is
something quite different .. .
The Le Peep on Northwestern
Highway and 14 Mile at the
site of former Jan Drake's and
Afternoon Delight, opened
Aug. 24 in the light and airy
atmosphere with seating
around the 100 mark.
The concept of this
restaurant chain (there are 70
in 20 states around the coun-
try) is totally different from
others . . . with much in-
novativeness in the selections
for breakfast and lunch.
Hours are 7 a.m. to 2:30
p.m. seven days a week .. .
Some time in the next year, a
number of the locations, in-
cluding Northwestern High-
way, will also be open even-
ings for dinner.
Large windows, etched
glass and lattice work make
for a nice, casual setting .. .
But Le Peep's menu is the
thing . . . Cleverly concen-
trated on intriguing selec-
tions . . . with over 40 unique
egg dishes, numerous knife-
and-fork sandwiches, soups,
salads and hot and cold sand-
wiches . . . A children's menu
will be introduced in January,
plus egg white omelettes .. .
Le Peep presently offers Eg-
gbeaters for those who wish
them . . . and dotes on
bigness.
Le Peep is not your ordinary
"eggs over easy" operation
. . . About 10 three-large-egg
omelettes are most unusual
. . . like smoked salmon
omelette, Sir Benedict
omelette with smoked turkey
locked in with mushrooms,
water chestnuts, broccoli and
cream cheese, all sealed in
with rich Hollandaise . . .
Even scrambled eggs are dif-
ferent . . . like Bumper Crop
— broccoli, fresh-sliced
mushrooms and water
chestnuts mixed with cream
cheese and accompanied by
side of Hollandaise.
Lunch has five salads with
their own personalities, plus
10 interesting sandwishes,
four on croissants . . . There
are eight ultra-light pan-
cakes, a couple of benedicts,
the regular with eggs and
another of seafood and snow
crab . . . Plenty of orange and
assorted juices, oatmeal,
melon, grapfruit, etc. . . . plus
four frittatas, considered by
Le Peep as predecessor to our
omelettes.

Many of the choices can be
found only at Le Peep, which
will open a third company-
owned Michigan location
after Jan. 1 in Farmington
Hills across from the Novi
Hilton . . . Plus West Bloom-
field, another is now in
Birmingham.
Biggest breakfast seller is
the Omni omelette weighing
22 ounces . . . with three
kinds of breakfast meats, two
varities of cheese and fresh
vegetables . . . At lunch, the
California Chick and Cajun
Chick sandwiches, both
breast filets, go over big.
When Le Peep first opened
about 30 years ago as The
Village Pantry outside of
Aspen, Cola, it was only for
breakfast until 11 a.m. .. .
Owner and originator, Donald
"Buddy" Waldman, was a ski
buff who worked until 11 a.m.
at his restaurant and then hit
the slopes.
His partner as of 1983, after
Waldman had opened one
company unit and one fran-
chised unit, is Allen Bern-
stein, chairman of the board
and chief executive officer.
Le Peep doesn't serve
breakfast, brunch or lunch as
you would expect from a
restaurant ... It presents an
interesting experience.
WHY SUCH a fuss over
plum sauce? . . . Because at
last a Chinese restaurant
with the real thing . . . It's at
the new Wok Inn on South-
field across from Farmer Jack
in the Southfield Plaza at
121/2 Mile . . . Egg rolls are not
doughy or heavy-tasting and
the almond boneless chicken
actually comes with slivered
almonds like it used to.
NOW RIALTO Cafe on
Woodward just south of Nine
Mile in Ferndale, comes out
with another under $5
wonder . . . 12 oz. fresh broil-
ed white fish filet for $4 with
second purchase of same
white fish $5.50 . . . It's
Rialto's celebration offering
'signaling a hearty welcome to
opening of 1-696 expressway
. . . a complete meal from
soup or salad right on down to
dessert. •

THE RATTLESNAKE

Club at River Place isn't just
Jimmy Schmidt's outlet for
modern American cuisine .. .
it's also with some good jazz
loving . . . His Grill Room
casual dining spot where
customers wear whatever and
order everything from pizza
and pasta to escalope of
salmon and filet of beef, has
jazz concerts Thursdays, 7
p.m. to 11 p.m., and Friday

and Saturday, 5 p.m. to mid-
night . . . Dec. 21, 22, 23 is
Charlie Gabriel Quartet . . .
Dec. 28, 29, 30 is Marcus
Belgrave Quartet.
BACK IN 1926, George and
Ira Gershwin's jazzy musical,
Oh, Kay! opened on Broadway
. . . with the country in the
midst of prohibition and
bootlegging was the national
pastime ... In an improbable
but predictable GerShwines-
que plot, an English duke
uses his yacht, anchored off
Long Island, to transfer
bootleg hooch to an estate on
shore owned by a handsome
playboy . . . The English duke
has an adorable sister named
Kay, the playboy has too
many girlfriends and the

Le Peep takes
eggs to a new
dimension.

result is a mixture of
mistaken identities, im-
posters, revenue agents, the
fabulous Gershwin score, and
a happy ending.
Oh, Kay! opens a five-week
engagement at the Bir-
mingham Theatre Dec. 30
through Feb. 4 . . . set in glit-
zy, glittering, high-stepping
Harlem with the same sensa-
tional Gershwin score that in-
cludes sizzling dance
numbers, hot jazz and
beautiful ballads like "Some-
one lb Watch Over Me,"
"Maybe," and "Clap Yo'
Hands," flappers, bootleggers,
gamblers, Charleston and
same happy ending.
RON CODEN is at Moun-
tain Jacks of Farmington
Hills through December.
THREE CHEF series of
cooking classes is back .. .
with Milos Cihelka of Golden
Mushroom, Brian Polcyn of
Pike Street Restaurant and
Ed Janos of Chez Raphael .. .
Classes begin Jan. 6 for series
price of $150 . . . More info by
calling Denise Rossman,
8955-2620.

Kosher Chinese Restaurant
Competiton set to take place
Feb. '-\18 at the International
Jewish Festival '90 in New
York.
Kosher Chinese cooking
adapts Jewish dietary laws to
traditional Oriental dishes
. . . -Skyrocketing interest in
the kosher market across the
United States has prompted
establishment of many new
kosher Chinese restaurants
. . . New York will have three
