decides to transfer his family,
animals and possessions to
the other side of the Jabok
River. Now he is alone in the
dead of night.
The text is interrupted as
we await the meeting with
Esau. A man approaches - or
is he really a man or some
divine being? - who wrestles
with Jacob. Jacob tries with
all his might to prevail
against him. "Let me go for
the dawn is breaking."
But Jacob says to the divine
being, "I will not let you go
unless you bless me."
"What is your name?"
"Jacob!"
"Your name shall be no
longer Jacob but Israel, for
you have striven with beings
divine and human and have
prevailed:'
When Jacob became Israel,
his new name changed him
completely. Now, Jacob is no
longer his old self. The old
Jacob lived in the past. Jacob
had struggled not only with
himself but had emerged
purified from his wrestling.
Jacob became Israel with
God's help. Now he is ready to
assume his destiny. This
became the crisis in Jacob's
spiritual history.

With the interruption of the
story of Jacob's wrestling
with the angel, the text then
tells the unfolding of the final
act of the drama of Jacob and
Esau.

his week's sedra deals
with a key figure in the
Torah: Jacob. After
some 20 years of wandering
and growing up, Jacob is corn-
ing home. All kinds of
memories flood his mind. He
is a changed man now.
But one encounter awaits
him. He must meet his
brother, Esau. The fear of his
brother and their differences,
especially how Jacob deceiv-
ed Esau, haunt Jacob. He
wonders how Esau will
receive him. He sends some
reconnaissance to learn more
about Esau, only to hear that
his brother is approaching
with 400 men. Jacob's fears
are intensified-- because he
-knows he cannot go back nor
can he stand still. His
tormented conscience over-
whelms him with terror. He
