native land after leaving
Laban, he remembers the in-
jury he had done his brother
and how Esau had threaten-
ed to kill him. Jacob
wondered if the longing for
revenge still persisted in
Esau's heart. He did not
think Esau was of a forgiving
nature. Perhaps Jacob should
try to win his favor by means
of sending gifts?
But the mission of peace
fails. Jacob interprets this as
meaning only one thing: war,
not peace. Jacob was greatly
afraid and distressed.
Scripture used the words
"afraid and distressed" to ex-
press Jacob's emotion. Why
two words? Either would have
sufficed. Rashi explains that
Jacob was afraid because he
might be killed, and was
distressed for fear that he
might be provoked to kill
Esau, his brother. The -fear of
being hurt is instinctive.
Compassion, however, is a
trait cultivated when we fear
hurting others. Jacob wanted
to preserve peace. He dreaded
violence. He despised bloodsh-
ed and abhorred war. The
Torah teaches that the way to
deal with people whom you
fear and dislike is the way
Jacob followed when he was
going to meet his brother,
Esau, after so many years had
passed. Sometimes, - time
heals wounds of the spirit.
At the crucial moment
when the two met, Esau
_spoke to Jacob.
"This man is your brother.
He is your own flesh and
blood. True, he harmed you.
But forgive. Grant him a com-
plete pardon." Esau forgave,
and kissed his brother in
forgiveness.
The poet, Ernest Crosby,
wrote:
"My soul might be
I searched for God and He
alluded me.
I sought my brother out and
found all three."
Perhaps thinking of Jacob
and Esau and their recon-
ciliation, the psalmist wrote:
"How good, how delightful it
is for all to live together
like brothers."
"Behold, how good and how
pleasant it is for brethren to
dwell together in unity!" ❑
