wab says. "Instead, we would
invite four or five friends over
for Shabbos dinner. It was
comfortable and no one felt
fixed up. Sometimes people
met, but if nothing came of it,
at least they would have a
nice Shabbos dinner and it
was not an intense
disappointment.
"We've tried to set up our
singles groups based on that
model — to offer safe en-
vironments, so that there is
not the intense pressure that
if you don't go home with so-
meone, you have failed."
Rabbi William Gershon of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek
agrees. His goal is to give
Jewish singles places, ac-
tivities and events where they
can meet other Jewish singles
without a great deal of social
pressure.
"We have a singles program
on Friday nights that is an
authentic Jewish experience,"
Rabbi Gershon says. "You
don't have to feel the evening
was wasted, or you were
degraded if you don't meet so-
meone. I would like singles to
meet, but here, they have a
good Jewish experience, as op-
posed to just having a dance,
which has its place, too.
"Judaism and religion can
help fulfill a need to deal with
loneliness," Rabbi Gershon
says. "There is no formula for
these things. Each person has
to find his or her own way.
The important thing is to be
yourself. People respond to
people who are genuine."
