MONEY SAVING COUPONS

ONE SERVING
VARIATIONS
Parsley Broth: To one cup
hot chicken broth, stir in 2
tablespoons chopped fresh
parsley. This is a strengthen-
ing broth with zero calories.
Egg Soup: Heat 1 cup
chicken broth in small
saucepan over medium heat.
While simmering, whisk in 1
beaten egg. Nourishing and
sits easy on the stomach.
Hot Potato Soup: Into 1
cup chicken broth, stir in %
cup leftover mashed potato.
Season to taste with salt, pep-
per and a little frozen
chopped chives (optional).
Note: may substitute mashed
baked potato (cooked in
microwave) if there are no
leftovers.
Carrot Soup With
Orange: Stir 1 jar (6 oz.)
junior baby food carrots and 1
tablespoon frozen orange
juice concentrate into 3/4 cup
chicken broth. Heat and
season to taste.
Vegetable Soup: In small
saucepan, heat .1 tablespoon
vegetable oil or margarine.
Saute 1/4 small onion, cut
coarsely and Y3 cup frozen

mixed vegetables. Add 1 cup
chicken broth. Heat and eat.
Fresh Tomato Broth: In
small saucepan, heat 1 table-
spoon vegetable oil or mar-
garine. Saute 1 small tomato,
cut coarsely. Add 1 cup
chicken broth and 1/8 tea-
spoon dried tarragon or basil.
Bring- to simmer before
supping.
Onion Soup: Saute 1
medium onion, thinly sliced
in 1 teaspoon vegetable oil or
margarine. Add 1 cup chicken
broth and bring to simmer.
Pour into mug or dish and top
with slice of toasted French
bread.

HOT DRINKS AND
TODDIES
All hot drinks are comfort-
ing but toddies have an extra
booster. The original Scotch
nightcap is prepared with
whiskey, water and honey.
Here are a few more soothing
libations. Each recipe serves
one.
Scotch Toddy: Rinse out, a
mug with hot water to heat.
Pour in a jigger (about 2 oz.)
Scotch or bourbon. Ibp up
with boiling water and sweet-
en to taste with maple syrup,
honey or sugar. Float a slice
of lemon on top (optional).

best friend's standard cold
cure): Rinse out small sauce-
pan with cold water so that
milk won't scorch. Do not dry.
Pour in one cup milk and
warm. Pull pan off heat and
add 1 to 2 oz. brandy. Sweeten
with honey to taste. Pour in-
to warmed mug and top with
a tiny nut (Y4 teaspoon) butter.
Sprinkle lightly with nutmeg
(optional) before serving.
Note: milk may be warmed in
mug in microwave. •

Hot Spiced Cider: Pour
about 1Y4 cups cider or apple
juice into a small saucepan.
Add Y4 cup water, dash ground
cinnamon and cloves, 2 teas-
poons sugar or honey and a
squeeze lemon juice (about 1
teaspOon). Bring to simmer
over low heat. Adjust sweeten-
ing. Pour into a warmed mug
or heatproof glass.
Coffee Cream: Pour % cup
milk, % cup prepared -coffee
and 1 egg into a heavy bot-
tomed saucepan. Whisk
together over medium heat
until hot. Whisk constantly
and do not allow to boil.
Sweeten to taste and pour in-
to a large; warmed mug.
Remove from heat and •
sweeten to taste. Serve with
a cinnamon stick "stirrer"
(optional).
Russian Tea (this was the
favorite, non-alcoholic
beverage of my grandfather.
The purist usually placed a
sugar cube onto a spoon, dip-
ped it into the tea and sipped
the tea through the cube): Fill
a large mug or heatproof
glass with weak tea. Stir in
one tablespoon lemon juice
and sweeten to taste with
sugar or honey. Or sip
through sugar cubes as
described above.
Hot Fruit Shrub: In a
small saucepan, pour % cup
each orange juice, cranberry
juice and water. Stir and heat
through. Pour into warmed
mug. Note: any combination
of juices may be substituted.
Mocha Cocoa: In a large
mug, mix 1 teaspoon cocoa
with 1 teaspoon sugar and 1/4
cup hot water. Add Y2 cup
milk and % cup prepared cof-
fee (or % teaspoon instant cof-
fee and % cup water). Heat in
microwave for 40 seconds or
until hot. May top with un-
whipped light or heavy cream
and dust with cinnamon
(optional).
Stokos (adapted from an
English harvest drink): In a
small saucepan, place 1
tablespoon oatmeal, Y4 cup
frozen orange juice concen-
trate. Add 1 cup water and
bring to boil, stirring. Strain
into a mug and sweeten to
taste. 1=1
