A broad coalition of pro-
choice groups — including a
long list of Jewish organiza-
tions — is preparing for the
November 12 "Mobilization
for Women's Lives" in
Washington.
Despite concerns about the
high-handedness of the
event's major planner, the
National Organization for
Women, pro-choice activists
here seem confident that the
event will contribute to the
emerging pro-choice trend
across the country.
The event involves ac-
tivities in dozens of cities

and towns across the coun-
try, along with the march in
Washington. In Missouri,
Jewish organizations, led by
the National Council of
Jewish Women, are leading
a march on the state capital;
in California, Jewish women
from a number of groups are
participating in a symbolic
collection of keys, intended
to tell state legislators that
abortion remains the "key"
issue of the late 1980s.
In Washington, more than
a half-dozen Jewish
organizations have endorsed
the rally.

Sagi Confers
On Environment

Yoav Sagi, Israel's leading
environmentalist, was in
town this week for a round of
meetings with a number of
administration and congres-
sional luminaries, as well as
fellow environmentalists.
Sagi, who heads the Socie-
ty for the Protection of Na-
ture in Israel, met with Rep.
Tom Lantos, D-Calif., and
Rep. Anthony Beilenson, D-
Calif., both of whom serve on
the board of SPNI's
American support group.
Sagi also huddled with offi-
cials of the Environmental
Protection Agency.
He was scheduled to
discuss the environment
devastation wrought by re-
cent forest fires in Israel —

and to garner American
support for the re-foresting
effort.

Japan Decries
Bias Charge

In a highly unusual action,
the government of Japan has
officially responded to com-
plaints about the spread of
overtly anti-Semitic litera-
ture in that country.
In a memorandum issued
to the Japanese Association
of Publishers by the Foreign
Ministry, officials condemn-
ed the widespread publica-
tion of anti-Semitic books
and described the need to at-
tack the "underlying prob-
lems:' 0
