First Lady Gets ORT
Education Award

Women's American ORT
staged a major coup when it
arranged for an appearance
by First Lady Barbara Bush
at its 30th Biennial Conven-

O

tion, which was held in
Washington this week.
Barring last-minute snags,
Ms. Bush was scheduled to
receive the first Beverly

Minkoff Award for her
efforts in furthering the
cause of education on
Wednesday; the theme of
this year's ORT gathering
was "Education and Democ-
racy: an Agenda for the
90s."
"It was just a matter of
persistence and a lot of
work," said ORT com-
munications director Mel
Galun, who admitted
spearheading the drive to br-
ing Ms. Bush to the conven-
tion. "We really didn't know
if she'd accept until the last
minute; there is a lot of com-
petition for her attention."
The lineup at the gather-
ing's Sunday night banquet
included Sen. Nancy
Kassebaum, R-Kan., and
Israeli ambassador Moshe
Arad, who thanked the 1200
ORT women for their con-
tributions to more than one-
hundred schools in Israel.
The banquet featured an
unusually crowded dais,
with more than 60 ORT offi-
cials and diplomats from 13
countries eating their
chicken and kugel under the
harsh glare of spotlights.

Chris Gersten To Head
NHS Refugee Office

The Bush administration
continues the slow process of
filling out the ranks of the
federal service. And one re-
cent appointee may play a
major role in the resettle-
ment of Jews leaving the
Soviet Union.
Chris Gersten has been
appointed director of the of-
fice of refugee resettlement
at the Department of Health
and Human Services. In that
position, he will oversee
large-scale programs to
assist refugees from a
number of countries, in-
cluding the Soviet Union.
Most recently, Gersten
served as executive director
of the conservative National
Jewish Coalition, the group

formed out of the nucleus of
Jewish activists involved in
the first Reagan presidential
campaign. Before that,
Gersten was political direc-
tor at the American Israel
Public Affairs Committee.
He is also husband of con-
servative activist and former
Maryland senate candidate
Linda Chavez.
Gersten joins a long list of
politicos associated with the
National Jewish Coalition
who have moved into the
Bush administration — in-
cluding Joe Gildenhorn and
Mel Sembler, who both
received ambassadorial ap-
pointments, and White
House director of public liai-
son Bobbie Kilberg.
