in pubs, Mr. Joe's on 12 Mile
and Northwestern, does
wonders with ground beef,
onion rings, French fries and
all the trimmings for the low-
cholesterol crowd.
"Ditto, Miller's Bar in
Dearborn where they don't
give checks. You're on the
honor system.
"Red Cedars on Telegraph
and Nine Mile used to be the
favorite watering hole for
regulars. Since the restaurant
burned down, customers have
switched to. McVee's right
across the street.

"Just try parking in the
McVee's lot at lunchtime. If
you're lucky enough to find a
spot and get through a con-
sistently long line, you'll like-
ly be greeted by jovial host
Herman Yagoda. The food is
reasonable and very satisfy-
ing. The bar is bustling.
"McVee's has a fun, noisy
atmosphere and folks are
friendly. Yagoda says the
restaurant also caters to a
steady dinner crowd.
"Now that summer has
gone, head on over to Key
Largo on Walled Lake Drive.
The big draw is the deck
overlooking Walled Lake.
"The fish is fresh and nice-
ly prepared and there are
some specialties such as
lobster pasta, paella for two,
chicken breast stuffed with
apples and a chargrilled surf
and turf. This comes with a
good salad or soup. Be sure to
order the Key lime pie for
dessert.
"Clarkston Cafe on Main
Street in Clarkston's tiny
downtown area offers a rutic,
country setting with barn-
wood and old utensils on the
wall. But the food is fairly
sophisticated.
"The waitress tells you that
whatever you order is fine
because the cafe serves good
food. We had a choice of clam
chowder, onion soup or
strawberry soup. We opted for
the-onion which had a decent
amount of cheese on top.
"Salads are large but not
specatcular. We enjoyed the
sea bass which was crisp, firm
and served with seasoned but-
ter on the side. Others chose
the baked halibut which they
savored.
"Is beef making a com-
eback? It depends what
restaurateur you talk to. Greg
Goodman of Cafe Bon
Homme in Plymouth says
since fish is now as expensive
as meat, sales of beef, lamb
and veal have seen a dramati c
increase.
