Two Quakes
Shake Israel

Jerusalem (JTA) — Two
earthquakes shook northern
Israel on Monday but caused
no casualties or damage.
The first of the minor
tremors reached 4.2 on the
Richter Scale, according to
the Israel Geophysical In-
stitute. The second was
weaker.

Homeless Aid
Urged By USA

New York (JTA) — In-
spired by the Yom Kippur
reading of Isaiah, which
urges charity with repen-
tance, the United Synagogue
of America's "Operation
Isaiah" will encourage its
members to donate food and
clothing for the homeless as
a High Holy Days gesture.
The Isaiah haftarah in-
cludes the passage, "Share
your bread with the hungry,
take - the homeless into your
home, clothe the naked
when you see him, do not
turn away from people in
'need."
"United Synagogue's
philosophy is that religious
lessons are not simply exer-
cises in memorization or
historical analysis but truly
lessons to live by," said Lois
Goldrich, public affairs di-
rector of the international
organization of 850 Conser-
vative congregations.
The Department of Edu-
cation of United Synagogue
is urging rabbis, congrega-
tion presidents and Hebrew
school principals to spread
the message of Isaiah and
utilize every means at their
disposal to involve all
members of the Conser-
vative community to par-
ticipate in tikkun olam
(mending the world) by help-
ing the less fortunate.
United Synagogue of
America estimates that if
every congregant gathered
in a Conservative synagogue
for the Kol Nidrei service on
Yom Kippur eve brings one
pound of food and a garment
for the needy, 500 tons of
food and over one million
pieces of clothing could be
gathered.
