Victims Demand
Payment Now

Bonn (JTA) — Jewish and
non-Jewish groups in the
West German state of North
Rhine-Westphalia are
demanding that the state
r and federal governments
immediately make available
1[- eparations funds for Nazi
Lvictims that were authorized
but never paid out.
A statement released in
C ologne noted that a 300
million mark fund was es-
tablished three years ago to
( make reparations available
:or Nazi victims who had not
peen otherwise compen-
;ated.
But because of extremely
jigid criteria, only 1.6

[

million marks were actually
paid, equivalent now to
about $825,000 of the
original $155 million.
According to statistics
released by the German
Association for Social
Psychiatry, only 10 percent
of 1,400 former victims who
applied for reparations actu-
ally received money.

During the coming week Yeshiva Beth Yehudah will observe
the yahrzeits of the following departed friends, with the
traditional memorial prayers, recitation of kaddish and stu-
dying of mishnayos.

'Miracle' Triplets
Born In Israel

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A
medical miracle has yielded
triplets.
A 28-year-old woman, born
without ovaries, gave birth
last weekend to healthy
triplets conceived in a test
tube, then implanted in her
uterus.
The two girls and a boy
were born at Beilinson
Hospital in Petach Tikvah.
Their birth as triplets under
such circumstances
reportedly is a first in Israel
and is only the second such
occurrence worldwide.
The triplets, whose birth
weight ranged from 3 to 3
1/2 pounds, were delivered
by Caesarean section.
Their medical history is a
cooperative affair. Three ova
were donated by another
woman who underwent fer-
tility treatments at Beilin-
son. They were then fer-
tilized in a test tube with the
sperm of the husband of
their birth mother.
The three resulting em-
bryos were implanted in the
wall of her uterus after her
body had been prepared with
hormones.

Vandals Destroy
Israeli Convent

Jerusalem (JTA)
—Unknown vandals in
Israel may have exacerbated
tensions between Israel and
the Catholic Church, par-
ticularly the Carmelite
order.
Israeli media reported
Tuesday that vandals had
destroyed the remains of a
13th-century Carmelite con-
vent near Haifa. According
to reports, the vandalism
was systematic, with the at-
tackers smashing stone after
stone at the site, which is be-
ing excavated by a group of
Carmelite nuns.
Israel Radio reported that
the destruction of the site
was discovered soon after
religious circles in Haifa had
warned they would not allow
the excavations to continue
as long as a Carmelite con-
vent remained on the site of
the former Auschwitz death
camp in Poland.
