Fred Butzel
Perhaps some will speak out
with gratitude for what was
achieved for and by them at
that humanizing center:
Perhaps some of the youths of
that earlier era will recall the
name Fred M. Butzel, who
made Boys Republic an im-
portant part of his life.
Butzel was among the ear-
ly advocates of the impor-
tance of Boys Republic as an
instrument of the communi-
ty's social needs. In the midst
of our involvements in
numerous Jewish causes, he
would call me to invite me to
join him for an afternoon at
Boys Republic. I learned
about the exciting youth ser-
vice from him.
At the Republic, Butzel was
greeted cheerfully. He, in
turn, socialized with the
youngsters. Some he already
knew by their first names.
It is well to know about
such enthusiasm engendered
in a prominent personality.
His interests were not limited
to aid for the arriving im-
migrants, to Jewish Welfare
Federation functions and
United Jewish Charities
relief work or to Hebrew
schools which had his en-
dorsement and support. He
was civic minded to the nth
degree as his involvement in
Boys Republic indicates.
In just a few days, the
Jewish Welfare Federation
will present another Fred M.
Butzel Award for 1989. This
year Tillie Brandwine will
receive the award.
The Butzel fame keeps em-
phasizing commitment to
social progress in the trianing
of our youth. Boys Republic
earns increased recognition,
while the linking of it and the
Butzel name serves as a
delight in the Jewish com-
munity's memory. ❑

Dr. Burman
And Liturgy

multiple role in medi-
cine and theological
literature distinguish-
ed Zionist leader Dr. Daniel
Burman. The Israeli pioneer
with a role in several lands as
ophthalmologist, who died
Aug. 30 at the age of 79, left
leadership legacies also in the
Zionist Organization of
Detroit.
As a pioneer in Eretz Israel,
Dr. Burman served in the
subsequent Israeli Defense
Forces and practiced medicine
there for many years. Then
came a long career in
academic roles in New York
and Howard University. His
ophthalmological practice
was also in North Africa
where he served as a medical
officer during World War II.
In practice in Detroit for a
number of years, his chief in-
terest here was in the Zionist
organization and he was an
activist in many functions
with his wife Beatrice.
As a cousin of Dr. Chaim

Daniel Burman
Weizmann, first president of
Israel, and Moshe Sharett,
who succeeded David Ben-
Gurion as Israel's prime
minister, Dr. Burman carried
on a family tradition in
Zionist activism.
Dr. Burman commenced
receiving additional acclaim
in liturgical writing when, in
1985, he wrote and published
Praying With Understanding.
This volume which serves as
a guide to the siddur,
elucidating the prayers, was
translated into Hebrew, and
is planned for translation in-
to Russian and Hungarian by
the World Zionist Organ-
ization.
Detroit Zionist leaders
recall his association with
the movement here as having
added inspiration to the
movement and to concerns
for Israel's progress and
security. ❑
