I NEWS I
Court Silences Women
Praying At The Wall
Jerusalem (JTA) — A group
of women that has been try-
ing to conduct prayer services
at the Western Wall suffered
a legal setback Monday when
Israel's High Court of Justice
ruled that the group, known
as Women of the Wall, cannot
chant prayers aloud at the ho-
ly site until the court holds a
final hearing on the case on
Dec. 27.
In the ruling, the court re-
jected the women's applica-
tion for an order instructing
the Ministry of Religious Af-
fairs and the rabbi in charge
of the Wall to allow the
women to pray together
undisturbed.
Instead, the court ordered
that they pray "according to
the customs of the site" as
determined by Rabbi Yehuda
Getz, the rabbi in charge
there.
Getz strongly opposes the
women's activities and had
petitioned the court, conten-
ding that the women's chan-
ting of prayers was disruptive
to worship at the site.
Following Orthodox
religious tradition, the plaza
in front of the Wall is divided
into separate men's and
women's sections. While men
conduct group prayer services
in their section, prayer in the
women's section customarily
is private and silent.
The women's prayer group
was formed last December. It
began holding monthly
prayer sessions on Rosh
Hodesh, complete with Ibrah
readings and vocal chantings
of the Hallel and other
musical sections of the
service.
The prayer sessions trig-
gered vociferous and violent
opposition from the ultra-
Orthodox, both male and
female. On more than one oc-
casion, the women were bodi-
ly removed from the site by
female ushers hired by the
Religious Affairs Ministry.
Gazans Without IDs
Barred From Israel
Jerusalem (JTA) — Several
hundred Gaza Strip laborers
were denied entry into Israel
last week because they didn't
have the new magnetized
identification cards issued by
the Israeli authorities.
The Arab workers, who are
employed in Israel, were turn-
ed back by security forces at
the Erez checkpoint even
though showing the cards was
not mandatory until Friday.
About 110,000 Gaza Arabs
commute to jobs in Israel
every day.
The head of the civil ad-
ministration in Gaza, Brig.
Gen. Arye Ramot, personally
inspected the checkpoint last
Thursday morning and said
that new ID cards were made
necessary by a wave of
assaults on Israeli citizens at-
tributed to Arabs from the
Gaza Strip.
The new computerized
cards, Ramot said, "prevent
those. people who do not have
a clean security or criminal
record from entering Israel:'
He said 60,000 new cards
have been issued and an ad-
ditional 30,000 to 40,000 will
be issued in the next few
weeks.
