srael's government has
brushed off reports of
increasing strains bet-
ween Washington and
Jerusalem and says it is shar-
ing an intelligence bonanza
with the United States
resulting from the abduction
of Hezbollah Sheik Obeid.
But in private, both Israeli
and pro-Israel American of-
ficials are deeply troubled by
what one of them called "the
Bush and Baker chill" now
affecting American-Israeli
relations.
Although Prime Minister
Yitzhak Shamir's top aides,
such as Yossi Ahimeir, say
that reports of a rift are total-
ly inaccurate little more than
another attempt to drive a
wedge between two allies — a
less -sanguine official said:
"Once again, the Jews are
pinching their cheeks to
make them look rosy."
The United States, whose
intelligence network in
Lebanon and Iran is extreme-
ly weak according to ex-CIA
chief George Bush's own ad-
missions, has greatly benefit-
ted from Israel's action
against Hezbollah. Obeid is
the first major terrorist leader
to be captured by any country.
"We have renewed full in-
telligence cooperation with
the Americans, as before,"
said Ahimeir. "There 'are
times when you cannot reveal
your hand and tell your
friends everything; but now
the Americans are getting all
the intelligence information
we obtain, and updates on
Obeid's interrogation. Now,
there is full understanding by
Washington, and justification
for our action. Obeid is not
just a religious leader, but
deeply and personally involv-
ed in terrorism."
The issue of sharing in-
telligence information has
been a thorny one between
the United States and Israel
for years. Jonathan Pollard
justified his spying for Israel
on the basis of the fact that
the Reagan administration
was not sharing intelligence
information with Israel that
was vital to Israeli security
needs. According to one in-
formed source, under the
Bush administration the
American intelligence organs
have become even more
guarded about sharing vital
intelligence information with
the Israelis.
Ahimeir said he saw no
substantive difference bet-
President Bush:
Angry cable.
ween the Reagan and Bush
administrations, emphasizing
that the differences are only
in style and character: "Bush
and 13aker are very different
from Reagan and Shultz," he
noted, which is to say that the
current Administration is
more pragmatic in its ap-
proach and has no deep reser-
voir of empathy for the
Jewish state. And that is a
source of ongoing concern as
the hostage dilemma con-
tinues. 0

Levy Held
Without Bail
New York (JTA) — A Jewish
militant jailed for opening
fire on a Manhattan street
was ordered held without bail
by a New York judge after a
hearing last Thursday.
Mordechai Levy, the
founder of the Jewish Defense
Organization, wounded a
bystander when he fifed an
automatic rifle at two
members of the Jewish
Defense League and a third
person from the roof of his
apartment building on Aug.
10.
He faces charges of attemp-
ted murder, assault and
possession of a deadly
weapon.
The incident was the
culmination of a bitter and
bizarre feud between Levy
and Iry Rubin, the head of the
Los Angeles-based JDL.
The clash occurred when
Rubin, fellow JDL member
Steven Rambam and Allan
Klebanoff went to Levy's
apartment to serve him with
court papers related to a libel
suit.
