I SINGLE LIFE

leading people about one of
the most important concerns
in their life — their income.
We should not delude
ourselves into thinking other-
wise. Whenever we try on a
dress, take a test drive
without planning to buy, or
merely ask the price of a
camera, we are implying the
possibility of buying the item
— and this is precisely what
the salesperson infers.
In addition to preventing us
from engaging in deliberate
deception, the storekeeper
law teaches a deeRer lesson.
It makes us keenly aware
that we have obligations
toward people whom in
general we regard as beyond
our obligation.
While our society is obsess-
ed with rights, Judaism is
obsessed with obligations.
For example, Americans are
frequently made aware of con-
sumer rights. Yet, here we
have an instance where
Judaism teaches consumer
obligations.
Finally, the law can easily
be applied to much else in life.
This was made clear to me
when, after I spoke about this
law, a young woman told me
how she wished the men
whom she dates would live by
this law. So often, men imply
interest that is in fact not
there.
Thus, for men who are
dating women, a simple ap-
plication of this law would
read: Do not sleep with a
woman if you know that you
have no intention of commit-
ting to her.
lb many women, sexual in-
timacy implies the possibility
of a man's lasting commit-
ment to her. (If a man
disagrees with this assess-
ment, Jet him, then,- simply
state the truth: "I want to
sleep with you, but honesty
demands that I tell you now
that I will not commit to
you.")
This law keeps you
honest. 0
