has appointed Eric M. Gilbert
of East Lansing to the posi-
tion of program director for
the 1989-90 school year.
Programs for the beginning
of the school year include:
Sept. 19 — Jewish activities
fair and dance. Admission is
free. Refreshments will be
served.
Sept. 20 — Open house and
free Shabbat dinner.

WSU Hillel Has
New Scholarship

The B'nai B'rith Hillel
Foundation at Wayne State
University is seeking can-
didates for a new scholarship.
The Lou Grossman scholar-
ship is to be awarded to a
member of WSU Hillel who is
majoring in a business
related field and has achiev-
ed a 3.0 or better average in
the student's major field.
An application may include
letters of recommendation.
Need and previous service to
the Jewish community will be
taken into consideration in
awarding the scholarship.
Candidates must apply for
the scholarship by letter to
Rabbi L. Finkelman, director,
Hillel Foundation. Please call

Is Offered

The Catherine Direnfeld
Scholarship is awarded each
year to a Jewish student in
the Metropolitan Detroit
area. The deadline for ap-
plications will be the end of
September.
There is no application
form; students interested in
applying should write to Rab-
bi Louis Finkelman, director,
B'nai B'rith Hillel Founda-
tions of Metropolitan Detroit,

The letter should outline
the student's qualifications
for the award.

Michael Berke

as chief operating officer of
the United Jewish Charities.
Berke, who also serves as
chief operating officer of
Federation, has been with the
organization for 17 years. He
was director of the Allied
Jewish Campaign and assis-
tant director of Federation.
Before joining the Federa-
tion staff, he was executive
director of Hillel Day School.

MDA Needs
Volunteers

Glenda and Gerald Green-
wald were named honorary
co-chairs of Detroit's 1989
Jerry Lewis Labor Day Tele-
thon for Muscular Dystrophy.
The telethon will be aired
on WJBK-TV2 from 8:30 p.m.
Sept. 3 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 4.
Volunteers from Wayne,
Oakland, Macomb, Monroe,
and Washtenaw counties are
needed to answer phones and
to take pledges.
Interested volunteers who
are 18 years of age or older
can call MDA, 476-2920.

Akiva To Have
Rummage Sale

Akiva Hebrew Day School
will hold its fall rummage
sale 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 17 at
the school. Akiva is seeking
donations of clothing,
household items, small ap-
pliances and furniture.
