Adat Shalom Synagogue
will offer a series of classes
next month in conjunction
with the Midrasha — College
of Jewish Studies. The mini-
courses are designed as a way
to prepare for the High Holy
Days.
"The High Holy Days and
Sukkot in Rabbinic Litera-
ture" will be taught by Rabbi
Rod Glogower of the Hillel
Orthodox Union and the
Judaic studies department
of the University of Michi-
gan. The course is set for
7:30 p.m. Thursdays Sept. 7,
14, 21 and 28.
At 8:30 on those same even-
ings, Dr. Ivan Starr of the
Near Eastern and Asian
Studies Department at
Wayne State University will
teach a class on "The High
Holy Days in the Biblical
Period."
Cheryl Litt, an instructor
with the Agency for Jewish
Education, will teach two
Hebrew courses. "Beginning.
Hebrew Reading" will be of-
fered 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and
Thursdays from Sept. 7
through Oct. 3. "Inter-
mediate Hebrew" will be
taught 8:30 p.m. on the same
evenings.
All classes, which will be
held at Adat Shalom, have
been arranged by the
synagogue's Adult Studies
Commission.

Adat Shalom will host a
Welcome Weekend beginning
Aug. 25, when prospective
members are encouraged to
join current members and
their , families at several
synagogue events.
The synagogue will hold its
annual outdoor • Kabbalat
Shabbat service 8 p.m. Aug.
25. Rabbis Efry Spectre and
Elliot Pachter and Cantor
Larry Vieder will lead con-
gregants. An Oneg Shabbat
will follow.
Prospective members are
invited to a "Come Look Us
Over" open house 3 p.m. Aug.
27. The membership commit-
tee will be on hand to conduct
tours and answer questions.
Adat Shalom's fourth an-
nual "Fabulous Family Picnic
and Concert On the Grass"
will begin 5:30 p.m. Aug. 27.
This year's picnic will feature
Koleynu, a modern Jewish
rock folk band. Originally
known as Kol Yisrael, the
group has toured the United
States and Canada.
There is a charge for con-
gregants. Prospective mem-
bers are invited as guests of
the synagogue. Entertain-
ment, popcorn, balloons and
favors are included.
The picnic is organized by
the synagogue's membership
committee, chaired by Alita
Cyrlin and Ron Mitnick, and
the social club, headed by Lori
and James Issner.
Dress for the picnic is
casual, and families are en-
couraged to bring blankets,
lawn chairs and sports equip-
ment. Hot dogs, coney
burgers, cold drinks, chips
and brownies will be sold.
Due to the rules of kashrut,
only food purchased on the
premises may be eaten.
Everyone interested in at-
tending the picnic should
RSVP to the synagogue by
Thursday.
Temple Plans
Shabbat Picnic
Temple Emanu-El will hold
its first annual prospective
member Shabbat picnic Aug.
25 at the temple. Dinner will
be at 6:15 p.m.; services are
7:45 p.m.
Guests should bring family,
friends, more friends, food
utensils and paper goods. The
temple will supply wine.
Call the temple office,
967-4020, for reservations. In
case of rain, the picnic will be
held inside.
Temple Beth El
Installs Cantor
Temple Beth El will install
Cantor Gail Hirschenfang
during Shabbat services 8
p.m. Sept. 8.
Cantor Hirschenfang comes
to Beth El after six years at
Temple Beth Zion in Buffalo,
where she was instrumental
in starting a youth choir, an
adult volunteer choir and pro-
grams for Jewish music
month.
The public is invited.
Wine Soiree
Planned Aug. 26
Temple Israel will host an
International Food and Wine
Sampling Soiree 7:30 p.m.
Aug. 26.
There will be 80 fine wines
and luscious cuisine, music,
dancing and a wine auction.
There is a charge. Guests
age 21 and over are invited.
All proceeds will benefit Thrn-
ple Israel.
