asic elements in fine
dining have always
been recognized as in-
cluding good food and good
service.
The addition of other highly
regarded salient factors can
quickly change the word from
good to excellent . . . in the
full enjoyment of a superb
culinary experience.
There is much to be said
about Cafe Cortina, 10 Mile
Road, just east of Orchard
Lake Road . . . a free-standing
building that seems to beckon
guests for a gastronomical
adventure.
And this it is in the finest
sense of tastefful pleasure.
Cafe Cortina opened
December 1976, and instead
of maintaining a consistency
of goodness, it has gotten bet-
ter . . . A recent visit enter-
tained our taste buds with
even more gratifying results
than a time previous.
Our waiter, Paul Silveri, so
efficient, courteous and per-
sonable, brought us what
could best be described as an
elegant traditional and
classic Italian dinner.
Carpaccio with arugula and
parmesiano (roasted peppers
with olive oil and garlic), ver-
micelli with fresh tomatoes,
garlic and basil, scampi and
veal piccante with fresh
sauteed zucchini, radichio
salad of arugula, olive oil and
vinegar and fresh berries
with chilled praline
zabaglione . . . And to top off
this most delicious dinner, a
glass of Digestino Di Averna
liqueur . . . Having salad as
the last course is said to do
much in helping a person
digest his or her food.
Adjectives are many to
describe this dinner we en-
joyed at Cafe Cortina . . . but
satisfying greatness would be
more expressive.
In its own quiet way, Cafe
Cortina is considered by
many as one of our region's
finest northern Italian
restaurants . . . Cafe Cortina
has a reputation for return
visits once it has been
discovered . . . And discov-
ering Cafe Cortina is the
essence of high quality
goodness.
Two years after opening,
owners Rina and Adriano
Tonon built an addition onto
the building they own . . .
Seating today is 96 in booths
and chairs and another 30
that opens on weekends or
during lunchtime.
Soon, Cafe Cortnia will
begin still another room .. .
to seat 45 to 60 persons .. .
Rina and Adriano are big
favorites for all-occasion par-
ties in the dining room and
private facilities . . . Now it
will have yet another area for
festive gatherings.
People come from every-
where for Cafe Cortina's
scampi, which is a big
favorite, and its veal dishes so
expertly prepared and
elegantly served . . . The por-
tions are more than one
would expect to receive and
its prices are in line with
classic quality.
In back of the restaurant
Adriano's pride and joy is his
large garden where he grows
herbs, red cabbage, bell pep-

pers, tomatoes, zucchini,
celery and other Italian
favorites . . . Because of this,
Cafe Cortina can honestly use
the phrase, "Homemade with
home-grown ingredients."
Since Rina and Adriano had
the uncanny foresight to also
buy the property upon which
its restaurant was built over
13 years ago, they can do as
wanted with gardens, addi-
tions or whatever . . . That
Farmington Hills sector is
like gold now.
Call it lucky, but good sense
was needed in the first place
. . . And it is much to their
credit that Rina and Adriano
have achieved their present
status in having so fine an
Italian restaurant.
While it was being built,
Adriano used to sleep in the
booths . . . and even today he
is at the restaurant 8:30 a.m.
daily baking the breads and
making sauces among other
things . . . Then at 12 noon he
becomes your genial host
with wife Rina, who may
have finished washing clothes
at home for their two sons .. .
If they won the Michigan Lot-
tery in a big way, Cafe Cor-
tina would still be their baby
. . . and who knows? . . .
Adriano and Rina might
build another garden or
addition.
Rina also makes the
luscious desserts and helps
people plan their party .. .
She's quite good at this .. .
