IT IS SLATED as a night
from which summer
memories are made . . .
gourmet dinner by award-
winning Michigan chefs Ed
Janos of Chez Raphael and
Brian Polcyn of Pike Street
Restaurant . . . dancing under
the stars to a Glenn Miller-
style band . . . and auctions
featuring hand-painted silk
jackets by noted Michigan ar-
tists . . . All are part of Picnic
on the Grass XVII set for
July 21.
The evening, which benefits
Meadow Brook Art Gallery,
begins 6:30 p.m. with silent
auction of 32 silk kimonos
and jackets displayed in the
gallery adjacent to Meadow
Brook Theater . . . Later in
the evening, Frank Boos will
auction off 10 additional
jackets selected for their
beauty and originality.
The elegant silk jackets,
designed by Rosanne
Schlussel, were decorated by
44 Michigan artists, among
them David Barr, who recent-
ly completed a monumental
sculpture, "Polaris Ring,"
commissioned by the
Michigan Historical Museum
in Lansing.
After the silent auction,
patrons will be ushered down
to white tents set up on the
grassy campus of Oakland
University . . . Dinner for 350
will be created by chefs Janos
and Polcyn, both recently
finishing among the top five
in the prestigious Bocuse
d'Orr competitions held in
Chicago.

Meadow Brook Art Gallery
curator Kiichi Usui,
