Pike Street's Theme Event
Had A Touch Of The Grape

DANNY RASKIN

Local Columnist

T

heme dinners being
presented by Chef
Brian Polcyn and Pike
Street Restaurant in Pontiac
have been receiving much
rave acclaim.
Latest was June 19, with
collaboration of a former
Detroiter, Daniel Moore, now
a California winemaker liv-
ing in New York and owner of
ZMoore Wines.
The combination of Brian
and Daniel is quite unbeat-
able . . . Brian's cooking
leaves very little to be desired
. . . His magnificent and in-
novative cuisine is a stand-
out . . . This talent was
recognized while sous chef
under Master Chef Milos
Cihelka at Golden Mushroom
and as executive chef at the
Lark.
Explanation of the even-
ing's various dinner courses
were given by Brian . . . and
Daniel gave his on the wines
served by Pike Street's fine
tuxedo'd waitresses and
waiters . . . plus asking
everyone to raise glasses in a
toast to sister Renee Moore's
birthday . . . She had come
from New York.
All sauces at the dinner
were made with ZMoore
Wines . . . House-smoked
salmon and pheasant pate
with Roederer Estate Brut
(champagne was the only
wine not made by Daniel) .. .
Spicy pasta with tomatoes
and Vidalia onions, accom-
panied by dry 1988 vintage
natural grape Gewurz-
traminer . . . Grilled Colum-
bia River sturgeon with
mustard cream and chardon-
nay . . . Then a casual and
hearty easy drinking Granite
of Quafe (Daniel's first label)
and grapefruit . . . Roast stuff-
ed loin of veal with sweet-
breads and spinach plus a
delightful full bouquet red
Zinfandel . . . Dinner ending
was summer berries with
Reisling Sabayon and
Nougatine, served alongside
Daniel's newest wine as yet
not on the market, his red
Late Harvest Reisling.
There were 75 reservations
for the ZMoore Winemaker
Dinner at Pike Street
Restaurant . . . About 65
showed up, bad weather not
stopping them . . . and all
mighty glad they did.
Daniel's parents, Edna and
Morrey Moore, Jean and
Marty Hollander (Morrey and
Marty are CPA partners),

Linda and Barry Ginsberg,
Lisa and Michael Kurek from
Hartford, Conn. . . . all so
very proud of Daniel and wife
Natalie, whose maiden name
first initial makes up the Z in
ZMoore.
Seating at Pike Street
Restaurant is 160 in the main
dining room and 40 in the
lounge . . . Beige and brown
tones set off the restaurant's
delightful decor.
All foods of the evening by
Brian were designed around
Daniel's wines . . . Both
graduated together from Har-
rison High in Farmington
Hills.
Next theme dinner by Chef
Brian Polcyn will be July 24,

with Brian guest chef at Chez
Raphael in Novi, where he'll
combine abilities with Chef
Ed Janos and Maitre d'
Achille Bianchi.
NO MORE Northwood Inn
building on Woodward and
11 1/2 Mile in Berkley toward
end of September . . . It has
been sold and will be torn
down . . . Mark Ridley's Com-
edy Castle's last night there
is Sept. 16.
NEVER THOUGHT the
return of a restaurant would
create such approved commo-
tion. . . . This is what's hap-
pening with the Grecian fare
of Dimitri's of Southfield on
Southfield Road a block north
of 10 Mile, owned again by ex-
cellent host and restaurateur
Dimitri "Jimmy" Syros.
The only other restaurant I
can think of that it could also
have happened to . . . and
without any doubt been a big
success again .. . is the
original Darbys on Seven
Mile and Wyoming that burn-
ed down in 1968 . . others
tried to capitalize on the
name and used it by putting
an apostrophe between the
last two letters.
More and more people are
happily discovering that
Dimitri's of Southfield has
returned to its previous
locale.
Plus his usual excellent
Greek dishes (Dimitri's lamb

chops, sea bass and Greek
salads in particular are
superb), the new Niko's
Lounge with its complimen-
tary hors d'oeuvres is the
longest Happy Hour I know
. . . Dimitri calls it "Happy
Time," 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Also . . . he makes his
luscious rice pudding without
egg yolks . . . and there's ab-
solutely no difference in taste
. . . And those who want
raisins can have them on the
side when requested.
Dimitri's of Southfield's
highly-touted Sunday Brunch
will begin again Sept. 17 .. .
two weeks after Labor Day
. . . Reservations for parties at
the Sunday Brunch are
already being taken.
Speaking of parties,
Dimitri's is also back to the
catering on premises and out-
side for which he became
quite noted.
LOTS OF laughs tomorrow fir
night at Top Hat in Windsor
when "The Shenanigans"
bring their comedy routines,
satire and musical production
numbers to Canada's number
one dining showplace on
University Avenue.
LE METRO in Applegate
Square, Northwestern
Highway and Inkster, will
open middle of this month .. .
It'll be headed by Ed Janos,
executive chef at Chez
Raphael . . . His Le Metro
chef and part owner will be
Tim Winterfield . . . Linda
Houlihan, former hostess for
many years at London Chop
House, will be in charge of the
dining room at Le Metro, an
American bistro heavy on
fare for health conscious
folks, with vegetables, pastas,
etc.
MOVIE PREMIERE/
Celebrity Auction by Variety
Club of Detroit will have
honorary chairpersons
Shirley Eder, Chuck Daly of
world champion Pistons and
Jack Morris, Detroit Tiger
pitcher.
Chairman will be Bill Wolf
of Newton Furniture . . . with
co-chairpersons Dee Shapiro,
Liz Walters and Lois
Shaevsky.
Date is Oct. 5, at Northland
Theater . . . with pre-glo
party featuring both live and
silent auctions of celebrity
memorabilia, finger foods by
local restaurateurs, etc. .. .
It's 7 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. with
movie begiining at 9 p.m.
CUCINA DI PASTA on
