Reagan and Bush and
befriended several other
dignitaries. He took Israeli
Defense Minister Moshe
Dayan to synagogue in New
York. When Margaret
Trudeau was estranged from
her husband, Canadian
Prime Minister Pierre
Trudeau, Mazer babysat for
their three sons for a week in
New York City. He also pro-
tected Madame Chiang Kai-
shek for several months.
"Many people are awe-
struck by the lifestyles these
people lead, but they put on
their pants the same way we
do," Mazer said.
Mazer's wife, 17-year-old
daughter Tami and 16-year-
old son Corey have adapted
well to their constant
traveling.
"I would never have ac-
cepted an assignment
overseas unless my family
could accompany me," Mazer
said.
"We did in-depth research
as to the academic standards
of the schools, and it worked
out extremely well."
The Mazer children excell-
ed in their studies overseas
and in the sport of swimming,
winning medals and ribbons
at several competitions in-
cluding the Junior Olympics
held in Jacksonville, Fla., a
few years ago, and their
mother also kept busy, work-
ing as an interior decorator.
Celebrating the Jewish
holidays was a challenge for
the Mazer family while they
lived in three Islamic coun-
tries. But again, Mazer's
parents came through. Dur-
ing Passover, for example,
they shipped them a 10-pound
box of matzahs.
"My family and I have
learned so much from living
overseas," Mazer said. "We've
certainly learned to stop com-
plaining about things we take
for granted in the United
States, but most importantly
we've come to appreciate
things more by living several
years with less. The major
thing we've discovered is that
just because people talk and
dress differently, they're
basically no different than we
are as human beings." E
