Theater at Stratford-On-Avon.
Although he was nominated
for best actor in 1962, O'Toole
lost to Gregory Peck who
received the Oscar for his role
in To Kill A Mockingbird.
As Lawrence wages the
military campaign in the
film, O'Toole captures the
complexities of his inner
struggles and his reactions of
endurance to the physical
tests of war. Lawrence is a
man obsessed and O'Toole's
performance captures his
moments of enlightenment.
He immodestly likens himself
to Moses crossing the Sinai.
As the battles and casualties
increase, Lawrence grows in-
to his role as the charismatic
leader even as his personal
moral dilemmas multiply.
There is also humor as
O'Toole learns to ride a camel
and is awarded white, desert
garb to wear.
The story of Lawrence of
Arabia has implications for
the history of Israel's rela-
tionship with her Arab
neighbors. The military cam-
paign helped the Arabs to
identify along nationalistic
lines and not just as tradi-
tional tribal and religious en-
tities. Under Lawrence's com-
mand, a successful Arab
revolt was waged and the
beginnings of Arab na-
tionalism as we know it total-
ly developed and expanded in-
to most of the Middle East.
These military untis were the
predecessor to the Arab
Legion.
Although Lawrence cer-
tainly had a powerful effect
on the Arab political make-up
of today, he was not against
the establishment of a Jewish
state. He viewed the develop-
ment of the Arab empire
under British patronage as
co-exiting peacefully with a
Jewish homeland that had
been sanctioned by the
British in the Balfour
Declaration. He saw the
Zionist movement as a poten-
tial ally to the Arab
movement.
The ultimate tribute for the
film goes to David Lean who
directed a visual masterpiece.
Lean's signature is evident
throughout the film as con-
tinuous frames are signed in
beautiful strokes of grainy
sand and overpowering sun.
Desert life is very desolate
and often times in the film
one only sees a lone figure in
a scene.
In 1962 Lawrence of Arabia
won seven Oscars, including
best picture and director. Too
bad they do not also reissue
Oscar awards because Lean
deserves to receive one again
and O'Toole should finally be
awarded one for best actor.
