Bessie Orecklin
Bessie G. Orecklin had a
half century of record of af-
filiation with the major
cultural activities head-
quartered in the Jewish Com-
munity Center.
In the first group of the
organizing forces for the an-
nual Jewish Book Fairs, she
was a reader and a book critic
and many of the leading par-
ticipants in the book fairs
were her selections.
These marked continuity of
communal posts in the
Jewish Welfare Federation
Women's Division board and
Allied Jewish Campaign.
Major in her cultural and
Israel services was her leader-
ship together with her hus-
band, Dr. Leo Orecklin, in the
formation of the original and
continuing Detroit Chapter of
the American Friends of
Hebrew University.
Mrs. Orecklin, who was 84,
died June 20. A native
Detroiter, she was graduated
from Wayne State University,
earning a degree in elemen-
tary education. She taught
for many years in the Detroit
Public Schools. Mrs. Orecklin
also was a member of Temple
Israel.
She leaves two sons, Carl of
Ann Arbor and Dr. James of
Santa Monica, Calif.; a sister,
Clara Bachman; and three
grandchildren.
Lowell Haas
Lowell D. Haas, an English
teacher at Levey Junior High
School in Southfield since
1967, died June 16 at age 45.
A native Detroiter, Mr.
Haas was a 1961 graduate of
Mumford High School and a
graduate of Wayne State
University.
He leaves his wife, Lana;
two sons, Justin and Corey;
his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Martin (Shirley) Haas of Sun
City, Ariz.; a brother, Elson of
San Rafael, Calif.; a sister,
Cynthia Hecht of Tallahassee,
Fla.
Werner Heilbrunn
Werner V. Heilbrunn, a cer-
tified public accountant and
partner in the firm of Dubrin-
sky, Einstandig and
Heilbrunn, died June 20 at
age 66.
Born in Germany, Mr.
Heilbrunn retired from the
firm but remained a consul-
tant, and he was a financial
consultant for Can-on and Co.
He was a member of Temple
Beth El, Goodfellows, a life
member of the Michigan
Association of Certified

the funeral last week of Rab-
bi Yitzhak Yaacov Weiss,
doyen of Jerusalem's ultra-
Orthodox community.
Weiss, who died the age of
88, presided over the Beth
Din (religious court) of the
ultra-Orthodox Eda Haredit.
Streets were closed to traf-
fic as large crowds gathered
in Mea Shearim as soon as
word of his death reached the
neighborhood.
Born in Galicia, Poland,
Weiss headed several yeshivot.

New York (JTA) — Howard
Simons, former managing
editor of the Washington Post
and a chronicler of American
Jewish life, died last week. He
was 60.
In Jewish Times: Voices of
the American Jewish Ex-
perience, published last year
by Houghton Mifflin, Simons
presented the oral histories of
dozens of American Jews and
others.
A native of Albany, N.Y., he
received his Bachelor of Arts
degree from Union College in
Schenectady, N.Y., in 1951
and his master's degree in
journalism from Columbia
University a year later.
After serving in the Korean
War, he became a science
reporter for several
Washington news organiza-
tions, joining the Post in 1961.
He became assistant manag-
ing editor in 1966 and
managing editor in 1971.
In 1984, Mr. Simons became
curator of the Nieman Foun-
dation, which sponsors a pro-
gram in which mid-career
jo• -nalists are given a year of
study at Harvard University.
He had been a Nieman
Fellow himself in the class of
1959, and continued to fulfill
his duties even after learning
in April that he was terminal-
ly ill. Mr. Simons also
authored Simons' List Book
and The Landing, a novel
written with Haynes
Johnson.
