To the casual reader, this
statement seems to imply
that our community mikvah
is for the exclusive use of Or-
thodox Jews, which is, of
course, patently false. Any
married Jewish woman who
wishes to observe the laws of
family purity and use the
mikvah is definitely welcome
to do so.
It is true that, by virtue of
the fact that mikvah obser-
vance is mandated by Torah
Law, the majority of women
who attend mikvah are Or-
thodox. Nevertheless, many
Jewish women who do not
consider themselves Or-
thodox use the mikvah and
find that it brings an extra
dimension to their marriage.
I must stress the word
"Jewish," however, because in
this sense Rabbi Arm's state-
ment is correct. What our
mikvah is not used for is non-
halachic (ie: Conservative
and Reform) conversion
ceremonies and converts of
this process, since, without ac-
ceptance of the entirety of
Torah and mitzvot, these
women do not truly become
Jews (the old "Who is a Jew?"
issue again).
The laws of family purity
are a vital and richly rewar-
ding aspect of Jewish life and
all Jewish women, regardless
of their affiliation, are cer-
tainly encouraged to learn
and observe these laws and
make use of our community
mikvah.
