I YOUTH 1
Young Israel
Lists Winners
The Young Israel Council. of
Metropolitan Detroit an-
nounced the 1989 winners of
the Louis A. Horowitz
Memorial Youth Awards.
The winners are: Yedida
Cohen, seventh-eighth grade
category; Nancy Berman,
ninth-lOth grade category;
and Ariel Schochet, 11th-12th
grade category.
The winners were selected
based on a paper on one of
three topics: write a letter to
Palestine Liberation Organi-
zation leader Yassir Arafat
explaining why you agree or
disagree with his demand for
a Palestinian state; "In every
generation they stand against
us to destroy us" — give three
examples of generations in
which this was true, describe
"they" and the levels of their
success; and discuss your feel-
ings about the phrase "It is
difficult to be a Jew."
The awards were estab-
lished by the Horowitz fami-
ly in honor of Louis A.
Horowitz, a leader of the
Young Israel movement in the
Detroit area.
