appy with Miserables.
That is the status of
Shlomit Aharon-Dor,
who is starring in the
musically revolutionary Les
4
Miserables, at the Cameri
Theater in 'Ibl Aviv.
Tel Aviv's production of the
popular show based on the
Victor Hugo novel is rocking
Israel as much as it has
rocked Broadway since its
opening. - 4
But then Aharon-Dor
"4
knows how to rock an au-
dience. The good-looking
sabra is a member of Habibi,
the singing group hailed as
Israel's number one vocal
group.
-4
The group, founded in 1974,
has grown up considerably
.4
since its early roots "when we
would parody hits from the
'50s, like songs by Paul Anka.;
with Israeli music. We were 40
like an Israeli Grease, says
Aharon-Dor. "We were a very
big hit."
Three of the four Habibi
members knew early on they
would click. "We were all
born in 1950, and all were
together in the Israeli army,"
he says of colleagues Ami -I
Mendelman and Kiki Rots-
tein. They have been friends
since 1969, when they first
formed a pop group, the
precursor of Habibi.
As far as the fourth
member is concerned, .4
Aharon-Dor knew there
would be chemistry; his wife s '
Yuval, is an integral member
of Habibi.
Amid the sand dunes,
Habibi caused quite a splash.
"We started a nostalgia wave
in Israel," says Aharon-Dor.
4
"We created our own music,
our own style, a middle of the
.4
road mixed with light rock 'n
roll."
The mix worked well — the
troupe captured Israel's
"Violin of David" Award. But
no matter how popular the
4
pop artists became, financial
rewards were limited, leading
to the troup's touring. "Israel
is a small country so it is hard
to make a living,". says
Aharon-Dor. "Israeli rock
idols cannot afford luxurious
life. If you sell 20,000 albums,
you're a big hit.
"But we do many different
things. We produced a show,
As Time Goes By, a nostalgia
show with songs from Al -4
Jolson to the Beatles."
And then, there are the
tours. "We toured for United
Jewish Appeal," says Aharon-
Dor. Habibi has traveled
