CHEVROLET'S
HIGHEST AWARD FOR
CUSTOMER STATISFACTION

Reading this article did not
stir up warm, fuzzy memories
of our youth; rather it further
reinforced the notion that so
many of our children have a
limited concept of life beyond
the point, as Ms. Rollin's
notes, "where Northwestern
ends and the Lodge begins."
It also concerns us that The
Jewish News would print an
article that portrays a vital
part of our community in
such a manner.
If this sentiment is
representative of the bulk of
your readership then our
community has become self-
serving, shallow and limited.
Do we not owe it to our
children (and ourselves) to
educate them that not all
Jews, not all people, live in
spacious suburban homes and
that they are, in fact, privileg-
ed to enjoy their present
lifestyle and surroundings?

Soviet Jews
And Israel

It has been said many times
that the State of Israel rose
out of the ashes of the
Holocaust so that no Jew
would be stateless again.
Israelis have made the
ultimate sacrifice, fighting
numerous wars, to perpetuate
a homeland for all Jews.
American Jews have con-
tributed many millions of
dollars toward this same goal.
In the May 5 article,
". .. Passage to Freedom
Campaign Past Half Way
Point," the comment was
made, "What would we have
given in the 1940s to have the
same opportunity to save
Euroepan Jewry?" If Israel
had existed in the 1940s, this
question would not be asked
today.
Not one American visa is
necessary for emigrating
Soviet jews. Israel is here to-
day specifically to embrace
emigrating masses of Jewish
people without any quota and
visa restraints.
If "freedom of choice" is
really the issue and half the
emigrating Soviet Jews
wanted to resettle in India,
would the American Jewish
Joint Distribution Commitee
still foot the bill?

FRIDAY, MAY 19, 1989

I

Young Israelis starting out
in life, American olim and,
now, Soviet Jews face the
grim fact that in Israel apart-
ments for purchase are im-
possibly expensive while ren-

tal units are not available.
The Federation's $75
million "Passage to Freedom"
campaign, instead of bringing
Soviet Jews to America,
should be used to build 2,000
or more affordable rental
apartments in Israel. Over
time, the federations will get
their money back through the
rental income.
Presently, the low-paid un-
skilled labor takes two years
or more to build in Israel
what our Jewish builders
here in America do in six
months or less. That low-paid
labor is expensive. Hadassah,
ZOA and ORT can do
something about that and
help create new Jewish enter-
prises and employment by of-
fering in their Israel voca-
tional centers up-to-date
training in all the building
trades to provide the skilled,
highly-productive labor need-
ed for a modern building in-
dustry .. .
A UJA-Israel housing pro-
ject will do more for the
future of our people than sub-
sidizing Soviet Jews to come
to America.

B'nai B'rith
And The Arabs

In your April 21 issue, at-
torney Reed Rubenstein
wrote a long piece about
Jewish organizations and
how they have hurt their own
cause. About half the article
is devoted to an account of an
incident involving a B'nai
B'rith fundraising letter. The
story, as he relates it, makes
his point brilliantly; unfor-
tunately, the story he tells is
pure fiction. It just didn't hap-
pen that way.
Mr. Rubenstein says "B'nai
B'rith drafted a solicitation
letter for Hillel direct mail
fundraising." The letter was
produced by our direct mail
consultants. It did not solicit
money for Hillel. It was simp-
ly one of many in a series of
fundraising letters for B'nai
B'rith.
Mr. Rubenstein says that
Arab-American groups ob-
tained a copy of the letter and
protested, and "to buy peace,
B'nai B'rith apologized and
retracted the letter." Wrong
and wrong again. The letter
was withdrawn just after the
first mailing, when we receiv-
ed a phone call from one of
the recipients (not an Arab
organization) complaining
that some of the language in
one sentence of the letter was
offensive .. .
We did not hear from our
Arab-American friends until
after this decision had
