already been made. We did
not purchase peace. We did
not capitulate to any
pressure. We were motivated
by ethics, not cowardice. In
our revised letter, and in
subsequent mailings, we have
continued to expose and op-
pose anti-Israel and anti-
Semitic propaganda on cam-
puses .. .
The political effectiveness
of Jewish organizations is
surely open to scrutiny and
debate, but let's not manufac-
ture the evidence to fit the
argument.

Bakeries And
Kosher Bread
Kudos to Richard Pearl for
his well written and infor-
mative article on Detroit's
kosher bakeries (May 12).
I would like to point out
that there are some serious
errors in the statements at-
tributed in the article to
Rabbi Mordechai Wolmark.
He is quoted as saying that,
in order for a kosher bakery
to exist, it must be closed on
the Sabbath and Jewish
holidays and the entire eight
days of Passover. This is ob-
viously not true.
Until very recently, the
Council of Orthodox Rabbis
(Rabbi Wolmark's group) gave
its blessings to a Dunkin
Donut shop on Ten Mile and
Greenfield, owned and
operated by a Palestinian
Arab. That place was open on
the Sabbath and all Jewish
holidays and, nevertheless,
was sanctioned by the Vaad.
At the present time, the
Vaad is granting kosher cer-
tification to another Dunkin'
Donut shop on Twelve Mile
and Northwestern Highway.
This shop is owned and
operated by Carlos Velasquez,
a Roman Catholic .. .
The truth of the matter is
that a bakery need not be
Jewish owned in order to be
kosher. All that is needed is
adequate supervision by a
reliable Orthodox rabbinical
council. Indeed, 95 percent of
the bakeries certified by the
major kosher certifying agen-
cies on the eastern seaboard
are owned by non-Jews. These
produce what is known as pas
palter, kosher certified non-
Jewish bread.
There was one slight omis-
sion in Mr. Pearl's article.
There is another kosher
bakery in the metropolitan
Detroit area. It is Desserts by
Sylvia, Ltd. Located on Ten
Mile at Telegraph, this
bakery is under the supervi-
sion of the Metropolitan
Kashruth Council of
Michigan . . . This bakery is
Jewish owned, but not
Shomer Shabbos, just like
Zeman's .. .

Greek Court
Upholds Order
Athens (JTA) — The Greek
Supreme Court ruled by a 4-1
margin Friday that alleged
Palestinian terrorist Moham-
mad Rashid should be ex-
tradited to the United States
to stand trial for a fatal
airliner bombing.
But the final decision rests
with the minister of justice,
who can order extradition or
override the high court under
Greek law.
Nevertheless, the U.S. State
Department welcomed the
court's rejection of Rashid's
appeal against extradition.
"This decision was made
against the background of
threats by terrorists, who
sought unsuccessfully to in-
timidate the Greek judicial
system," Richard Boucher, the
department's deputy
spokesman said, referring to
the assassination of judges
who have ruled in previous
extradition cases.
Rashid, 39, also known as
Hamdan, was indicted in the
United States for the 1982
bombing of a Pan American
Airways jet in which one
passenger was killed and 15
were injured.
Shamir, Peres
Back To Work
Jerusalem (JTA) — Prime
Minister Yitzhak Shamir,
released from Hadassah
University Hospital last Fri-
day after a short stay, resum-
ed his full schedule of work
over the weekend.
He will leave on an official
visit to Britain next week, as
planned.
Shamir presided over the
weekly Cabinet meeting on
Sunday, and on Saturday
night he chaired a meeting of
Likud ministers at his office.
Shamir was admitted to the
hospital last Wednesday, ap-
parently suffering from
fatigue. He underwent a
series of tests, all of which
turned out negative, accor-
ding to the hospital staff.
Doctors ascribed his fatigue
to overexertion.
Meanwhile, Vice Premier
Shimon Peres, the Labor Par-
ty leader, is also back on a full
schedule, following
hospitalization for prostate
surgery a week ago.
