Akiva Hoopsters
In Baltimore
An undermanned Akiva
Day School basketball team
lost three hard-fought games
in the Weiner Invitational
basketball tournament in
Baltimore, March 3-5.
But the Akiva squad did
not come home empty-
handed. The closeness of their
scores earned them a fourth-
place trophy in the six-team
event.
Akiva lost the third-place
game to Toronto, 43-40, even
though an injury left them
with no substitute forwards
or centers. "The guys showed
so much heart and so much
effort," said coach Moshe
Rose. "I think we all peaked
in that game." Joel Starr led
Akiva with 14 points and
Noam Koenigsburg added
nine.
Akiva opened with a 55-47
loss to Toronto on March 4.
Koenigsburg led with 13
points while Danny Najman
" had 12.
The next day, Akiva stayed
close to eventual tournament
runner-up New York before
dropping a 64-51 decision.
Starr scored 19 and Najman
14. David Kirshner injured an
ankle early in that contest,
leaving Akiva with just three
reserve players, all guards.
Rose used a three-guard
lineup at times against New
York.
Akiva played in the third-
place game 15 minutes after
losing to New York. The for-
ward line of
Starr,
Koenigsburg and Joey
Selesny went all the way in
the final contest. Starr was _
named to the All-Tournament
team.
Akiva will play host to a
tournament March 25-26.
Two Jewish schools from
Chicago and one from
Cleveland are expected to
compete. Two games will be
played at the Maple/Drake
Jewish Community Center,
beginning at 9 a.m. March 25.
The championship and con-
solation games will be played
the next day at the Jimmy
Prentis Morris Center, star-
ting at 1:30 p.m.
