MIKE ROSENBAUM

W

orld-class gymnast
Dana Dobransky
has received a full
scholarship to attend the
University of Alabama.
Dobransky, a senior at
Sterling Heights High
School, visited three other
schools, the universities of
Utah, Florida and Georgia,
before choosing Alabama, last
year's NCAA women's gym-
nastics champion.
Dobransky enjoyed the
Tuscaloosa campus. "I felt
really, really comfortable
with all the girls (on the gym-
nastics team), with the
coaches, with the at-
mosphere." She was also im-
pressed by the school's com-
munications program.
"They really stress
academics, which is really im-
portant," she added.
Dobransky, the 1985 gym-
nastics champion at the
World Maccabiah Games, is
making plans to defend her ti-
tle. But she does not know if
she will have a scheduling
conflict with the April 22-23
national tryout dates.
She also hopes to regain a
spot on the U.S. gymnastics
team. She will go to the zone
competition at Sylvania,
Ohio, April 7-8. If she
qualifies, she will go on to the
U.S. Classic in Oakland,
Calif., then to the U.S.A.
Championships, where the
national team will be
selected. ❑

Hoffman Wraps
Record ,Season

North Farmington High
school basketball guard Matt
Hoffman set three school
records in his junior season.
Hoffman, who averaged 17.2
points per game, set single-
game records with 40 points
against Plymouth Salem and
15 assists against Livonia
Churchill. He also set a
season mark by averaging 7.2
assists per game. Hoffman
averaged 3.5 steals and 3.2 re-
bounds per contest. He hit 40
percent of both his two-point
and three-point floor shots
and 70 percent of his free
throws.
Hoffman earned All-
Western Lakes Activities
Association honors for the se-
cond season. He will likely
earn more honors as area
newspapers announce various
all-star teams.
North Farmington coach
Tom Negoshian altered Hoff-
man's role this season, look-
ing for him to be the floor
leader while shooting less.
"He's a true point guard,"
says Negoshian. "We're hop-
ing that as next year ap-
proaches — because we played
all underclassmen — we're
hoping that he can just
assume that role instead of
having to score so much.
That's why he is being
recruited, because he is a true
point guard. He is being
recruited by some Division 2
(colleges) and a couple of Divi-
sion ls. What kind of summer
he has will dictate, more than
likely, where he's going to be
recruited."
