order to embark on an active

The recent hiring of Col.
Sella by Electro-Optics In-
dustries Ltd, an Israeli
defense contractor in Rehovot,
however, may affect discus-
sions of this year's foreign aid
to Israel.
Referring to sworn court
statements by then Defense
Secretary Caspar Weinberger
about the extent of the
damage to U.S. national
security resulting from the
Pollard affair, the weekly
publication suggested that
this year's $1.8 billion in
military grants proposed for
Israel should be cut annual-
ly to $1.6 billion "until the
damages are repaired and the
bills are paid."
The weekly publication
quoted an unnamed U.S.
Defense Department official
as saying that because of
Sella's appointment, future
contracts with El-Op "may be
stalled, agreements revoked,
meetings canceled and who
knows what else if this guy is
directly involved with U.S. of-
ficials."
An American represen-
tative of the U.S.-Israeli Joint
Political-Military Group, a
high-level governmental
forum that coordinates
strategic cooperation, was
quoted as adding: "We don't
want to have anything to do
with him, and if the Israeli
government tries to impose
him on us in any official
capacity,-then we will surely
object." ❑

Op Soviet Failure
May Hit Jews

Washington (JTA) — Jews
will be made the scapegoats
if the Soviet Union's attempts
at economic reforms do not
benefit the average Soviet
citizen, warned a longtime
refusenik who immigrated to
Israel only last month.

economic
The
provements have not yet
brought any tangible benefits
to the Soviet people and their
discontent could soon be
directed against Jews, Roald
(Alec) Zelichonok told the
Union of Councils for Soviet
Jews.
Speaking at the UCSJ's
biannual congressional brief-
ing on Soviet Jewry on
Capitol Hill, Zelichonok said
that the changes in human
rights under Soviet President
Mikhail Gorbachev were
"superficial" and were made
to win economic benefits.
