Family Trips
To Israel Set
Prospective travelers to
Israel will learn about na-
tional summer family mis-
sions, sponsored locally by the
Jewish Welfare Federation, at
a recruitment meeting March
15 at the home of Dr. Mark
and Linda Diem.
The meeting will focus on
family missions set for June
25-July 5, and July 9-19. The
Diems will lead the July mis-
sion, while Dr. David and
Susan Harold will lead the
June mission.
The complete itinerary, in-
cluding El Al flights and
guided tours, will be
discussed.
Families participating in
the mission will take part in
a group bar/bat mitzvah atop
Masada and enjoy home
hospitality in Yavne, Detroit's
Project Renewal sister city.
Other highlights include a
tour of the Galilee,
celebrating Shabbat at the
Western Wall and visiting an
archeological dig. Plenty of
time has also been allotted for
shopping and leisure.
For information, contact the
missions department at
Federation, 965-3939.

Toronto (JTA) — Although
the Israeli government does
not spend as much on health
and education as some other
Middle East countries, it re-
mains the most literate coun-
try in the area and has the
lowest infant mortality rate,
according to a recent report
by UNICEF.
In 1986, Israel allocated 3.4
percent of its budget to health
care and 6.7 percent to educa-
tion. At the same time, 30.1
percent went to defense.
In contrast, the Egyptian
government allocated 2.4 per-
cent of its budget to health
care and 10.8 percent to
education, while the Jor-
danian government spent 3.8
percent of its budget on
health care and 12.2 percent
of its financial resources on
education.
That same year, the Ameri-
can government allocated
11.6 percent of its budget to
health care, 1.7 percent to
education and 25.8 percent to
defense.
While Israel spent less on
education than its neighbors
in 1986, it appears to be a bet-
ter educated country.
In 1985, 97 percent of all
adult males and 93 percent of
adult females were literate.
