took them, melted them down
in a mold and fashioned a
young bull.
When the people saw the
golden calf, they exclaimed,
"This is your God, 0 Israel,
who brought you out of the
land of Egypt." Then Aaron
built an altar before it and an-
nounced a festival for early
the next day. The people
brought burnt offerings and
sacrifices and ate and drank

tion tells of Aaron, the
brother of Moses and
Miriam, the founder of the
priesthood in Israel. As the
older brother of Moses, he
played a key role in appearing
before Pharoah. He was con-
sidered eloquent and a man of
peace.
Now the Torah tells of his
questionable role in the inci-
dent of the golden calf and the
strange way Aaron acts.
When Moses failed to
return from Mt. Sinai on the
40th day and did not appear
in the camp when he was ex-
pected back, the peole
thought he was dead. They
felt abandoned, utterly
helpless. They went to Aaron,
who had been left in charge
after Moses departed for the
mountaintop. The people said
to Aaron, "Come, make us a
god who shall go before us, for
this man Moses who brought
us from the land of Egypt, we
do not know what has hap-
pened to him."
Yielding to popular in-
sistence, Aaron played for
time. He thought the people
would hesitate to sacrifice
their golden rings and
