As the older brother of Moses, he played a key role in appearing before Pharoah. He was con- sidered eloquent and a man of peace. Now the Torah tells of his questionable role in the inci- dent of the golden calf and the strange way Aaron acts. When Moses failed to return from Mt. Sinai on the 40th day and did not appear in the camp when he was ex- pected back, the peole thought he was dead. They felt abandoned, utterly helpless. The people said to Aaron, "Come, make us a god who shall go before us, for this man Moses who brought us from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has hap- pened to him."
