Remember When?
Then she's off to • the In-
stitute of Music and Dance or
the Center for Creative
Studies for rehearsals, which
are held from around 11 a.m.
until 2:30 in the afternoon,
six days a week, with a
15-minute lunch break
whenever the quartet can
work it in. After rehearsals,
each member goes her own
way, teaching private lessons
at Oakland University or at
the institute, until around 9
p.m. Tuesdays are set aside
for rehearsals only.
Concert tours aren't any
less hectic.
One recent trip took them
to Rochester, N.Y., to Chicago
to Indianapolis to South Bend
to Elkhart, Ind., to Chicago
and back to Detroit, all
within a period of 10 days.
Goldschmid emphasizes
that the quartet drives to
scheduled concerts whenever
possible. It's too expensive to
fly, she says, adding that at
least five tickets are always
necessary for the quartet —
Highbaugh's cello has to
travel, too.
Despite the long hours, the
high costs, the often-meager
financial compensation right
now, Goldschmid insists she
can't imagine ever wanting to
change her dream of playing
in a highly-successful string
quartet.
"Ten years from today, I see
myself, with these three
women, playing at a much,
much higher level than we
are now, and with a huge
repertoire.
"String quartet music is
the greatest music written —
the most perfect, most clear,
purest form of music there is.
When Mozart sat down to
write a string quartet, he put
every bit of his knowledge
and his love of music into it.
Beethoven's quartets are a
pinnacle of music. His late
string quartets surpass
anything he ever wrote. They
took us into another
world." ❑

grated tableside.
But we don't stop there. We like to
tantalize you just a bit with our
