PHILOSOPHY: "Work as hard as you can

BACKGROUND: Michelle Sage grew up in
Birmingham attending Westchester
Elementary, Covington Junior High and
Seaholm High School. Music was an

important part of her life as a
youngster. "I've always loved music a#:
played piano, since I was three!' recali.
Sage. She took lessons from her mother
and grandmother, Sylvia Barr, a concert
pianist.
At one point she planned on a
career in music, and at age 15, she was
in a band, writing scores and singing.
When she tried to return to classical
music after a hiatus of three years, she
found it too difficult. "I love playing,
and it will be a hobby for now," she
says.
Another passion in Michelle's life is
Judaism. "I was very involved with
youth groups. I was a board executive
for MSTY," says Sage. As a high school
student, she received a scholarship at
Camp Kutz in New York, and then
continued to work there for a few
summers. She also was a counselor at a
Mitzvah camp for deaf children.
Michelle also considered the
rabbinate as a career, but decided on
incorporating religion with sociology
and education. "I think what I want to
do in Judaism, I don't have to be a
rabbi. I'd like to teach?' She is currently
teaching fourth grade religious studies
at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Lansing. This summer Michelle plans
on working with Project JOIN at Jewish
Vocational Services.
When Michelle is not studying, she
is working. In Lansing, she sells ice
cream at the store Melting Moments. At
home in Birmingham, she is the night
and summer manager at Sydney Bogg, a
candy store. She is also busy working on
getting her sorority national
accreditation.
For the future, Michelle wants to
work in the Jewish community
combining her love of Judaism and
knowledge of sociology. "I'd love to do
research for the Jewish Community
Council."
