Jill Bruss
Is Bat Mitzvah
Jill Bruss, daughter of
Lauren and Joel Bruss, will
share her bat mitzvah will
Maria Golfand of Moscow,
USSR, on Feb. 4 at Congrega-
tion Shaarey Zedek.
Maria is the daughter of
Natalie and Yuri Golfand.
Golfand applied for an exit
visa in May 1974 and was
refused in October 1974. He
was a member of the Organiz-
ed Committee of the Sym-
posium on Jewish Culture
whose members had their
homes raided and searched.
Maria will not be allowed to
celebrate her bat mitzvah.
Jill will read the Torah for
both of them.
Marisa Edelman
Twins Her Rite
Marisa Faith Edelman,
daughter of Barbara
Edelman and the late Dr.
Lawrence Bruce Edelman,
will share her bat mitzvah
ceremony with her Soviet
twin and friend, Biana
Belichenko, daughter of Lud-
mila Belichenko, at 8 p.m.
Jan. 27 at Temple Kol Ami.
Marisa will read her Torah
portion, not only for herself,
but also for Biana, who has
been denied the right to have
a bat mitzvah.
Biana and her mother have
been on the refusenik list
since 1977. The reason they
have been denied the right to
leave Kiev, U.S.S.R. is
unknown. Marisa has written
Biana several times, but has
not received any replies.
Marisa and her mother Bar-
bara will attempt to phone
Biana and Ludmila before the
bat mitzvah service.

Tal Sapeika, daughter of
Gillian Cohen and Raphael
Sapeika twinned the obser-
vance of her bat mitzvah
celebration at Adat Shalom
synagogue Jan. 14 with Eva
Israelov, daughter of Larissa
and Boris Israelov of
Samarkand, USSR.
l•
the Israelov family applied
for exit visas at the same time
as Eva's grandfather. Only
her grandfather received per-
mission. There has been no
reason given for the family's
0 refusal. Eva will be unable to
have a bat mitzvah because
soviet' law prohibits anyone
under age 16 from par-
ticipating in religious
ceremonies.
Tal has written to Eva, and
she will attempt to reach the
family by phone.
