SOCIETY
gi
and beverage writer, will be
honored guest at special
Michigan wine reception.
Balzer is food and beverage
editor for the 750,000 circula-
tion Travel/Holiday magazine
. . . and has been selecting the
fine dining award-winners
since the program started in
1952 . . . At that time, only
two Michigan restaurants
were on the list of 49 nation-
wide . . . London Chop House
and Schuler's . . . Today, more
than 800 restaurants are
honored in the U.S., Canada
and Mexico . . . Schulers is
one of the few that have been
coveted in all 37 years with
Travel/Holiday awards . . . It's
80th birthday is this year .. .
Owner Hans Schuler's grand-
father, Albert Schuler, found-
ed the dining spot in 1909.
The four-day gastronomical
Michigan taste-testing tour
by Balzar, also food and wine
writer for New York Times,
began Wednesday at LaRotis-
serie in Hyatt Dearborn .. .
then to Detroit's Caucus Club
and London Chop House .. .
After a day at Hiram Walker
Distillery in Windsor, he
came back across the river to
Les Auteurs in Royal Oak,
Charley's Crab in Troy, Pike
Street in Pontiac and Machus
Red Fox in Birmingham.
Other evening activities in-
cluded Detroit stops at Opus
One, 1940 Chop House, Rat-
tlesnake Club and Van Dyke
Palce . . . Friday Balzar had
lunch at River Bistro in
Westin Hotel, headquarters
for his tour . . . Following
pauses at Joe Muer's, Pont-
chartrain Wine Cellars,
Money Tree and Whitney, he
moved on to the Lark, Chez
Raphael and Golden
Mushroom.
The 15 restaurants chosen
by him are . . . Machus Red
Fox, Golden Mushroom, La
Rotisserie, Caucus Club, Joe
Muer's, London Chop House,
Opus One, Pontchartrain
Wine Cellars, Van Dyke
Place, Whitney, Les Auteurs,
The Lark, Ellsworth in
Tapawingo, Jim's Tiffany
Place in Lansing and
Schuler's in Marshall.

day nights from 9 p.m. thru
Jan. 28 at Murdocks on
Crooks Road in Rochester
Hills.
YES, RUBY D'S at Sugar
Tree on Orchard Lake Road,
north of Maple, is closed .. .
Word is that another dining
operation may be looking to
take over the site.
NEW OWNERS at former
Bread Basket II in Tiffany
Plaza on Northwestern
Highway are Grace Crowl and
Bill Hickey, both culinary ar-
tists of much note . . . They'll
.
operate Taste of Seasons as a
carry-out deli, aided by Ron
Former, Bread Basket owner
.. . and as a gourmet carry-
out operation from appetizers
and hors d'oeuvres to soups to
pastries and desserts to com-
plete meals . . . Grace and Bill
are extremely proficient at
catering, also.
SHAWN RILEY, guitarist
and comedian now at Key
Largo in Walled Lake 8 p.m.
to 12 midnight, was imported,
you might say, directly from
the Virgin Islands . . . He's in
the Bogart Room.
BAIN'S DELI, with 26
locations in seven states, has
opened another unit in this
area . . . It's in the Summit
Place Mall Food Court on
Telegraph Road in Pontiac.
Steeped in tradition with
all the benefits of the evolu-
tion of the fast food industry,
Bain's Deli was established in
1910 in Philadelphia and car-
ries with it a high reputation.
CLAMDIGGERS restau-
rant on Grand River in Farm-
ington now has the new cook-
ing sensation, hot rock cook-
ing . . . It's a cook-it-yourself
method using a flat polished
granite rock heated in a
500-degree oven . . . The hot
rock is delivered to the table
on a large ceramic serving
tray with the dinner, ready to
cook.
Hot rock entrees are served
(Maine lobster, fresh fish,
shrimp and more) with
peapods pineapple and pep-
pers . . . plus three sauces for
dipping . . . the rock remains
hot one hour, allowing the
guest to tailor the meal to in-
dividual tastes.
