(TORAH PORTION I

FOR 3 DAYS ONLY

He should study and consult
it. For if the king, the leader,
the chief executive, is not
bound by a system of moral
values, power will become a
source of exploitation and cor-
ruption. All to whom power is
given must be on guard
against the moral decadence
that power sometimes
encourages.
Second, we find the
darkness of insecurity. There
are people who do not have
enough belief in their own

value to maintain self-
respect. They can raise their
self-esteem only by having so-
meone beneath them. So
much of prejudice rests upon
this emotional need. If there
were no lower classes, how
could we belong to the
higher? If there were no poor,
how could we take pride in
our wealth? If there were no
servants, how could we be
masters? We find those who
cannot accept the equality of
others because it would
disturb their own perverted
sense of self-pride. Darkness
descends upon such people,
for they reject brotherly rela-
tionships with those who dif-
fer from them.
Finally, we encounter the
darkness of doctrine.
Desperate people accept

Adat Shalom

Adat Shalom Synagogue
will observe Jewish National
Fund Shabbat on Jan. 21.

services, members of the con-
gregation will be encouraged
to help save the Jewish na-

tion of the congregation's ef-

ideologies and beliefs that
give them a sense of
superiority and encourage at-
titudes of contempt and scorn
for others. We identify the
great causes or ideals —
democracy, freedom, revolu-
tion, justice, faith, social
reform — to which we are
loyal adherents. We isolate a
certain quality, value or goal.
We assign it great importance
then dismiss, reject and crush
all who differ from us. Those
who speak in the name of
high ideals should never
forget that the ultimate test
of their efforts is measured by
the lives of men and women.
The most extreme and
dangerous expression of this
darkness is demonstrated by
terrorists who commit
heinous crimes in the name of
their "cause," destroying in-
nocent lives without regard
for the most fundamental
standards of human decency.
The crash of Pan Am Flight
103 is the latest in a series of
acts of international ter-
rorism that has brought
anguish to so many. Terrorists
rationalize murder in the
name of progress, justify
violence for the sake of
revolution and portray wan-
ton killing as a form of
political heroism.
We must overcome the
plague of darkness in
whatever form it appears. We
turn to God to open our eyes
that we may see our brother
and sister in every man and
woman.
