close ties to the Arab world.
David Brody, the venerable
Washington representative
for the Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith,
recently brought a • 40-year
run in that position to an end.
Although he will retire as
director of the Washington
operation, Brody will stay on
as special counsel to the
group.
Although no announce-
ment has been made, there is
widespread speculation that
Brody will be replaced by Jess
N. Hordes, associate director
of the Washington office.
Hordes is already a well-
known and respected figure
in the House and Senate of-
fice buildings.
And Tracy Salkowitz, an
outspoken and effective ad-
vocate for women, victims of
AIDS and the homeless in her
work with the American
Jewish Congress, will be leav-
ing her post in early January.
Salkowitz, who also serves as
vice president of the Religious
Coalition for Abortion Rights,
will become director of budget
and allocations for the San
Francisco federations.

ban development in the Bus_h
administration comes at a
moment when the nation
stands at the brink of a ma-
jor housing crisis, according
to Jewish activists who expect
to play a role in the upcoming
debate.
"Lots of organizations out
there are thinking beyond the
issue of providing blankets for
the homeless," said Ellen
Whitman of the Council of
Jewish Federations Washing-
ton Action Office. "The only
way to address homelessness
is to provide housing, to open
up new housing for low-
income people and families;
this is going to be a major
issue in the months ahead."
The gigantic federal budget
deficit is intensifying
demands for sharp cuts in
housing programs.
But the real crunch is the
expiration of a number of low-
income housing programs

Jewish Groups
Help Armenian
Relief Effort

Jewish groups have been in
the thick of efforts to aid
Armenia in the wake of that
country's devastating earth-
quake.
Immediately after the di-
saster, B'nai B'rith Inter-
national presented the Soviet
embassy here with a donation
of $1,500; a Canadian B'nai
B'rith group added $1,000 to
the kitty.
And last week, staffers at
the Washington office of the
American Jewish Committee
volunteered at the Armenian
Assembly of America — the
group that has coordinated
relief efforts in this country —
with bureaucratic chores
associated with mobilizing a
gigantic relief effort.
Aside from the obvious
humanitarian aspects of the
gesture, it was also a recogni-
tion of the key role the Arme-
nian group played in an issue
dear to the hearts of most
Jewish activists — the recent-
ly won fight to ratify the
Genocide Convention.

started in the late 1960s and
due to run out in the late
1980s.
Section 8, a program that
encouraged private sector
developers to offer low-income
housing through a voucher
system, comes up this year,
said Judy Golub, assistant
Washington representative
for the American Jewish
Committee,
After the 20 years owners
have the option of not renew-
ing a Section 8 contract — an
option many will exercise, ac-
cording to housing experts.
Sen. Alan Cranston, (D-
Calif.), and Sen. Alfonse
D'Amato, (R-N.Y.), are con-
sidering a housing bill that
would maintain Section 8
housing in some form. A
number of Jewish groups are
working with Senate staffs to
shape this and other meas-
ures.
