CARLA JEAN SCHWARTZ
Local Columnist
BACKGROUND: Peter Perlman grew up on
Hartwell in the Seven Mile and
Schaefer area. He attended James
Vernor Elementary School, Cass
Technical High School and Henry Ford
High School.
As a youngster he was active in
United Synagogue Youth at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek. He recalls
that he had one of the last bar mitzvahs
at the old building on Chicago Blvd. He
spent many of his summers at Camp
Maplehurst near Traverse City.
In the 10th grade, he quit high
school. "I was bored. My parents were
quite shocked." His parents then sent
him to an eastern boarding school
hoping he would finish school, but he
came home within a few months
because he injured his arm playing
soccer.

statement — It can't be done or we've
tried it in the past and it's not
successful. And turning negatives into
positives."
He then went to work for his uncle
in the building business for almost two
years. Six months before his class was
to graduate, Perlman reazlied he wanted
a high school diploma. "I completed two
years of schooling in six months with a
3.8 average." In the early afternoon, he
attended Cass lbchnical High School
and in the evening he went to Henry
Ford. He graduated in the summer of
1967.
He attended Ohio State University
for a short time and left dile to illness.
After recuperating, he worked at Camp
Maplehurst. In 1969, he met his future

For three years he worked in

Handleman Co. as a record consultant
for six years. In 1980, Perlman decided
to enter the insurance business after
completing courses at Michigan State
University.
One part of Perlman's life that has
been extremely rewarding is his
involvement with B'nai B'rith. He
began bowling at the "old" Oak Park
Lanes. There he met some older buddies
— Sheldon Fridson, Iry Segal, Abe
Rubinstein and Marty Weston. He was
active in the Detroit Lodge becoming
"Man of the Year," president for two
years and an important fund-raiser.
In September 1988, he was awarded
the Label Katz B'nai B'rith
International Youth award at the
international convention in Baltimore.
He was one of four recipients in the
world-wide competition. Perlman sums
up his involvement in B'nai B'rith: "I
met a tremendous amount of people
around the world. The friendships I've
made, I couldn't duplicate anywhere."
