Excalibur . . . Then Marty
and Johnny Cetrone catered
a party for 35, including co-
stars Sammy Davis Jr. and
Liza Minelli with ribs,
chicken and shrimp at the
Westin Hotel where Sinatra
stayed during their
engagement.
MOUNTAIN JACK'S of
Southfield on Greenfield
north of 11 Mile, closed by
fire, is open again . . . and
looking a lot cheerier than
before . . . It's one time when
a fire did more good than
damage . . . The dreariness is
gone and brightness
permeates throughout the
restaurant now . . . Mountain
Jack's of Southfield is a
favorite dining and watering
spot for many people who are
glad to see it back in action
again.
VIDEO DEPT. . . . by Mike
Dembs, owner of Video Zone
in Warren . . . Three Men And
A Baby. "I hate cute movies
and this is King Cute. This
movie wallows in cuteness .. .
Ahhh, isn't that baby cute,'
you'll find yourself saying,
but not as cute as Selleck,
Danson and Guttenberg. You
could overdose on cute from
viewing this movie. Which
brings me to my next point.
Why did they throw in that
idiotic drug subplot? Three
Men And A Baby is one of the
most manipulative films I've
ever seen and also one of the
worst.
Funny Farm — "Director
George Roy Hill has made
some of my favorite movies
(Slapshot, A Little Romance,
World According to Garp) but
this isn't one of them. In fact,
I can't understand what his
name is doing even connected
to this idiotic Chevy Cahse
vehicle. It's that old story of
the city boy trying to make it
out in the country and out of
his element. There's nary a
laugh to be found.
Colors — "Controversial on
release, this story of L.A. cops
vs. L.A. street gangs is as
topical as today's headlines.
Sean Penn and Robert Duvall
are the cops, teamed rather
reluctantly to combat street
violence. It works best when
it focuses on the gangs and
comes to a halt when Maria
Conchita Alonso enters as
Penn's love interest (it's just
not needed). Director Dennis
Hopper does a good job with
a tough story.
Above The Law — "Martial
arts expert Steven Seagal
makes an impressive acting
debut in this violent action
flick. He's another one of
those superhero types who
take on the mob. It's really
amazing how quick he must
be to dodge all those bullets
they keep firing at him. The

story is predictable but what
makes it work is Seagal's
larger than life screen
presence."
DINING IN CHICAGO
(Part 1) by Matt Prentice,
owner/chef at Sebastian's in
Somerset Mall . . . "Chicago
is very different than the
Detroit area where
restaurants are concerned.
Detroit is a city in which the
downtown area is no longer
the total center of night life.
Chicago is exactly the op-
posite. Although the Chicago
suburbs have their share of
good restaurants, the city
itself is the center of
attention.
"Next to New York, Chicago
is possibly the finest center
for restaurants in the nation,
though many would disagree
with me. Their downtown
area is so successful it is only
natural that it would attract
some of the country's finest
restaurants.
"For French cuisine,
Chicago is blessed with two
Mobil Five Star houses, Le
Perroquet and Le Francais.
Both are fabulous restaurants
offering impeccable cuisine,
great service (Le Francais is
sporadic) and great wine lists.
Le Francais chef Jean Ban-
chet is considered by some to
be the finest chef in the
country.
"When arriving at Le Per-
roquet on Walton St.
downtown, you go up to a
private elevator that takes
you into a very Parisienne at-
mosphere. The waitstaff here
is superb, as is the food. Their
wine list is above average and
the evening I spent there was
wonderfully relaxed due to
the calm surroundings,
precise service, and the atten-
tion to detail. The chef focuses
on Nouvelle style cuisine. I
had a mushroom mousse ap-
petizer garnished with
prawns in a pimento sauce.
"Le Francais is a culinary
show — literally. This
restaurant has only two
seatings because of the
method of service. The menu
is prepared and put on trays
for display. Once everyone is
seated, the waiters take each
item around to every table.
One would think that this
would make a selection
easier; it does not. It was dif-
ficult to make up my mind as
everything looked so good. I
ended up with a lamb loin in
pastry with spinach and
garlic which was to die for as
was everything else that was
sampled.
"Two other fabulous French
restaurants that I haven't
tried but have been told of by
friends with respected palates
are Ambria and the Everest
Room."
